Google's self-driving car snags first-ever license in Nevada

JDX Gold badge

Re: @Dave 126

I would expect that the number of times a human has to suddenly jump in to ensure safety is VERY low, otherwise it would not be deemed safe for use. I'd love to see information too, but I think we're all underestimating how smart the car is in the same way we stereotype computer speech recognition as being the way it was in the 90s.

I would not be too surprised if this is Google's 2nd "big product" after Google Search in terms of revenue.

US Judge says IP addresses don't identify pirates

"her wireless router was not secured"

I agree with the Judge but on this one specific defence, I'm not so sure. Isn't it sensible to stipulate that people are responsible for taking reasonable care to secure their internet access points? Otherwise we set legal precedent for a real criminal to deliberately use an unsecured router and get away with anything they want.

I agree - if this was a PC app £5 would be cheap. SmartPhone apps are real applications and of course this one doesn't have worldwide market so that means prices have to be higher.

Normal Vs Quantum information

What is that about? Seems to me that even if the other side can receive some 'quantum info', the ability to resolve it to readable/known state relies on receiving some information which is bound by c and therefore nothing is actually achieved?

Moore's Law has ten years to run, predicts physicist

how much work has been done on compilers in the last few years

People have also been saying that for years. It's undoubtedly true but a good optimiser can still beat the hell out of the compiler through knowing the context and stuff like SSE. The claim "modern compilers can't be beaten by hand coding" is simply bogus - however the truth is it doesn't normally need optimising.

Re: Sadly, Wirth's Law will keep on going

Software is ALWAYS about doing what it takes to run on the target hardware. It's all well and good being nostalgic but people used to hand-optimise ASM because they had to to make it run fast enough, not due to some sense of craftsmanship.

Those old-school skills are fun to learn and good to know, but you learned them because it was necessary to get the job done.

Facebook lowballs on initial IPO price

JDX Gold badge

Re: Will we actually be able to buy FB?

It might be gambling but we've seen IPOs of tech stock very commonly show a huge initial jump on launch day, before settling back over the short term.

JDX Gold badge

Will we actually be able to buy FB?

Or will they all get snapped up in an instant?

I don't view it a good investment, but buying as they appear and selling the same day is tempting.

Re: Blimey

Misogyny means "hatred of women". Either you don't know that or you're really keen to get on that high-horse, since nothing I said implied hatred.

And why you think hating women is not as bad as hatred for trans-gender people is rather baffling.

I don't know it is all about the apps. Email and web-browsing would be my two main needs for a smart-phone. We've already started to see that as HTML5 matures, a whole class of native apps become unneeded... and in many cases I'd rather view the real site on my phone than the cobbled-together app anyway.

"If it comes with Half Life 3, Left 4 Dead 2/3 and Counter Strike:GO then the uptake by Valve fanbois (like me) would cause a fair few games to get a linux port."

Except all the people who really want those games - fans of the prequels - have Windows already in order to play them. So I don't know it would mean extra sales, which is really all it boils down to unless the owner _really_ wants to go off on a personal mission. Which he might, if he's allowed to.
