I have a HTC Hero (GSM), I was waiting for the 2.1 update but have opted instead for a custom ROM (it's Android after all).

I'm now running pure Android 2.1, no HTC Sense, my phone is freaking awesome now. 2 days between charges, super fast and the latest apps, so yes, it's the third party software, including HTC!
