I know you mention the Psion Series 5 in the Series 3 paragraph, but the Series 5 was the one with the ground breaking foldout keyboard and great display, you could almost touch type on that thing! The Series 3 was a toy version of the 5!
Also, were is the Z88?
Great article though :)
"I'm beginning to wonder if the answer isn't so much for Microsoft to choose between the two, but rather to deeply entwine the two into one product."
That just sounds awful to me. I think you should keep the demarcation line between OS and Application absolutely clear. Smashing them together will just make a more confusing and bloated OS which could reduce the choice people have.
@Grikath
Just because you can do a thing doesn't mean you should.
If you want Nostalgia then go and get an emulator, this isn't Nostalgia as it's not Sincalir BASIC at all, it's something else with the Spectrum Basic name on it.
Education? Are you kidding me? BASIC is not a great language to teach programming concepts, especially Sinclair BASIC!
and then FUN. Ah yes, I do remember that, and this may be fun for the person who is writing it but this as you know is subjective. So you could also say it's fun to criticize (correclty) someone writing Sinclair BASIC with a view that its Nostalgic, Education and ... well... because it can be done.
I played with Spectrum basic for a number of years, but couldn't wait to move away from the clunky/slow environment and as soon as I had saved enough pocket money I moved on to other languages. And that was my feeling in the 80's never mind now!!
With all those features bolted on it's not really Sinclair Basic anymore is it... This is someone who just knocked out a crap interpretation of BASIC and bolted a load of crap at the end of it to try and make it up to date.No one is ever going to use it., little point developing this.
If our tax laws make it difficult for business to compete then why single out Game Dev's for special treatment? Shouldn't this be across the board? Maybe the case is we are just getting taxed too much to be competitive in anything without special exceptions like this?
Just seems, very unfair to everyone else.
@:Fatman: "collect your possessions and leave immediately"
You have a contract of employment, if you go against that and don't work your statutory notice then you will be in breach of contract. If you do end up in breach, then you are giving your douche bag employer even more ammo. Not good advice... and brach of contracts can be a serious issue.
"Team GhostShell said the online leaks, which are part of its Project Hellfire campaign, were made in protest against banks and in revenge for the rounding up of hacktivists by cops and government agents."
So to get their revenge, they stole a million innocents people private data... cause that will only hurt the banks right?
Nice on Anonymous Coward, you've pointed to an opinion piece which does not mention anything about the performance of any given language, never mind Java. Yeah, any one language can be better than another depending on the job...yawn... never have thought that.
Java runs fine in the enterprise, thats why you'll find it at the heart of Oracle, IBM, Novell etc... and these are enterprise guys that need the thing to scale... so I suspect your talking bollocks (a bit like the article your commenting on!) .
Anonymous for a reason hey?
"Oracle is coming relatively late to the GPU party. Microsoft, Mozilla, Google and Apple already all offer hardware acceleration for their browsers using GPU"
GPU acceleration for an enviornment such as Java has nothing whatsoever to do with accelerating a browser?? Has MS done this in .NET then? Eh? I must be missing something here surely?
"Smart phone gaming is making this design redundant unless your parents won't let you have a phone."
Phones are not equipped with the correct user interface for gaming, so until thats sorted then I will have to stick to dedicated portable gaming systems for my kicks.
"And for people who doubt that try using MAME on a touch screen smartphone, it's not the best experience."
Here here.
"ignoring that fact that to most people a screen twice the SIZE of a 3.5" one would be a 7" "
Yes, I will ignore that because it's wrong.
"i can only assume you are talking about area - and ironically the advert this article appears on top of says that the XL has 90% more area... meaning its LESS than twice the area"
OK, so ALMOST twice the size... jeeze, splitting hairs here aren't we?
I was surprised you recommended Three, I used it for four months on my last contract which took me up and down the country. In London and Manchester I cannot fault it, but it seemed almost everywhere else I went I struggled with a poor signal and dropped calls because of it.
I've moved to Vodafone for my new contract (which again, up and down the country) and so far I haven't seen any problems apart from a call dropped on my way to Inverness, but I think I can forgive that.
I would try and include a review from area's outside of the big cities as well, as not everyone lives in London and Manchester.
Although I do buy the occasional new game, most of the time I wait for it to drop in price or get it second hand. I do this because games are so expensive, and if the PS4 (or whatever it's called) aims to block second hand games in any way then I doubt I would be able to afford it.
Hi Luke, I wouldn't base your requirements and assumptions to fit everyone else, mind you I like the way you contradict yourself with "I would love one of those 1TB flash drives" in your next paragraph ;)
Hybrids are a great idea at the moment, I've got some Momentus XT drives myself and you can really notice the difference. Considering the reliability rate I've seen hybrids may also be more reliable than their SSD cousins.
"I’m not a fan of 16:9 displays on notebooks - call me old-fashioned, but 16:10 makes much better use of the available area - so it’s no surprise that I didn’t take too well to the 1366 x 768 resolution."
I'm with you on that one, unfortunately I really struggle getting a monitor or laptop at 16:10 ratio, do they exist anymore?
