Microsoft retires Windows 3.11 on 18th birthday

Kevin

@Yorkshirepudding

FYI it was not a OS at all but just a GUI like DOS Shell, your first OS was probably MS DOS 5.0 up to 6.22 if you used win 3.1seeing it wouldn't run at all on the other versions of DOS like DR.DOS 7.0 ;)

I actually just threw out my copy of it on floppies last week with the original instruction manual.

Windows 7 'pre-beta' washes up on Pirate Bay and co

Kevin

@Dr. Mouse

Won't argue about 95,98,ME, and Vista

But 2000 I've been using it for over 5 years on 2 different PC's, and still do, and find it VERY stable. The one PC is being used as a Apache web server, FTP server, Webmail server, and ran utorrent for over 1 year without a single crash, reboot, or being turned off. Only reason it did go down eventually was due to a power outage. Dunno about you but running for over a year with no reboots or crashing sounds pretty stable to me.

XP is on my tablet and i don't really see any real stability issues with it.

Google: Guinea pig brainwaves prove video ads 'compelling'

hmm

I find the ads VERY "compelling" because whenever I see one I am compelled to close the damn window and forgo the rest of the video.

Nintendo to limit DSi games with DVD-style region locks

Kevin
Stop

anyone else read the whole article?

"The DSi is backwardly compatible with software designed for the DS, but it’s worth noting that the DSi region-lock won’t apply to DS titles."

from the way that is written it sounds like it only applies to the online store for the DS ware which if anything like the Wii ware is a pile of emulated games and game demos. Not the actual DS cartridge based games.

I won't be buying one not due to the region lock for DS ware, but due to the fact my DS I bought on the day of release still works perfectly fine, and like the saying if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Anonymous plans zombie Scientology protest

Kevin
Stop

@Dick Lovewell

As someone who knows a 80 year old person with a child in that cult trust me they are really really evil. After joining the cult they cut off all communication with ALL of their family members, and transferred their children to a Scientology ran brainwashing school. Does that sound like rational behavior cutting off all communication? Only reason they know the family members are still alive is because they hired a private detective to locate them, and all attempts to get in contact have been futile.

They have been know to target people with mental disorders and con them into stopping their medications so their lies can take root.

So now tell me does that not sound despicable for even a "religion" to do?

Microsoft gives users six months longer to flee from Vista

Kevin

@Anonymous Coward Posted Friday 3rd October 2008 10:09 GMT

"Everyone now talks about how great XP is but when it first came out everyone was saying it was awful, and that there was no way they were moving off Windows 2000 as all that was new was some graphics that looked like they were designed by Fisher Price."

I still say that actually and still use win 2k pro. Anyone remember the one background that made fun of Windows XPs default backgrount by adding the telletubby house in and a telletubby with bill gates face on it?

Only thing I ran into that won't run on 2k was some virus that actually refused to run, I actually tried to purposely install it seeing it said XP only as a test. Other than the virus I have yet to run into software or hardware that won't work under 2000 that I use or want to use. So I see no reason to upgrade from 2k even except some pretty graphic interfaces and new prettier icons.

Catholic priests cane YouTube over blasphemous vids

Kevin

One question

Do these videos ACTUALLY show them pocketing the lil wafers of cannibalism and then showing them being flushed down the toilet? I only ask because I actually know of stores that sells the actual wafers Catholic Priest use in church to the public. So the Priest equate pissing on a WW2 memorial for real people that lived to the same level as pissing on a sugar wafer you can buy in any religious store.

Its just a reason

so the border patrols can confiscate your shiny new ipod to inspect it for Al Qaeda's speaches hidden on it, and it later gets lost in shipment back to you into the border patrol guys pocket. I also bet some of the laptops they confiscate go missing and end up on ebay to help alleviate Americas current financial issue.

Mozilla security chief: Apple should open up

Kevin

@David Kelly

#1 Is it not Linux that last week a company made a rootkit for? Just because something is non existent now or really rare does not equal the future. 5 minutes after this comment is posted someone might make the most infectious virus ever for the mac that goes live or they might not.

#2 OK do those machines you just named have idiotic users physically at the machine using it OR Administrators who know what there doing and not using it for menial task? I've not seen many windows servers that have been properly configured have viruses on them.

#3 Found one virus not a worm, I'll admit, called Leap-A while looking it up on Google which you have to download and run it but lets face it you can easily con users into doing that. Which if I remember was how a good amount of the popular Windows viruses spread. So how long until worms start like I sadi before just because it does not exist yet does not mean it won't in the future.

#4 I never claimed to care about anti-virus programs on a mac. I just said unlike a mac user I got something to tell me I have nothing on my computer not pray to the almighty Apple gods and hope.

#5 you have a point that also happens on windows a lot but lets face it if you were going to make a program to get the most wide distribution in as short of time you would pick windows so my original context holds up also.

#6 A car is not the best analogy to use because no matter what you do its still is possible to steal it. The biggest threat to any security is a uninformed user which is the way the original person I directed the reply to sounded and why I used a house.

#7 OK the 5 year comment was at Alexis Vallance who said in the 5 years they owned it not total years the OS was out. So please learn to read the whole context and the persons post it was directed at and do not show ignorance while calling someone else ignorant it really makes you look kind of foolish.

#8 Well as I have probably wasted a whole 3 days in CPU cycles on virus scans combined in 5 years on 2 boxes while the computers would not be in use anyways it doesn't really bother me. Now why bother bringing disk defrag into a argument about security? You call Webster and I clueles but last I checked Windows users know about defrag and its use where as Mac users don't know security holes exist at all.

I hate to say something you mactards got completely wrong. You think any time someone posts negatively about Apple's practices you think its an attack on the company (or religion the way most of act) that you so love. I'm not trashing the mac platform actually its the opposite I hope it doesn't become as popular as Windows to write the malware for, and I don't think telling their users how to make sure they don't get exploited or even that a security hole exists is hard but it seems most of you from your comments prefer to think its flawless and unbreakable but whatever its all up to you seeing your their consumer.

So please enjoy Steve's special kool-aid by all means.

And to do one correction my original comment I ended the wrong way seeing I was tired from work, the pile of crap was not directed at Apple computers but their practice of security through obscurity.

Kevin
Jobs Horns

@Alexis Vallance

OK lets remember the new generation of virus writers are not like the ones that started the game.

They no longer write viruses just to see what they can do as once was the case, the majority now write them to make a profit plain and simple. Going on that which is smarter to go after 10-12% of the market share or 80%+ of it.

Yes windows is insecure if you don't know how to lock it down, but your front door is no different if you don't know how to lock it. I personally prefer to knowing if my door won't lock or that there is a flaw in the lock so I can prepare for what might happen than being told the door's lock is working perfectly and no one will get in when the tumblers busted and can't lock.

And its so nice you have had no viruses in 5 years.. Ohh wait you don't know if you have anything cause last I checked OSX was able to be infected via worms, and seeing you have no anti-virus you can't check. Now on the other hand I have 2 windows 2000 pro boxes and have not had a infection in over 6 years and have a virus scanners that I update regularly to check if I do.

Now begone and go drink Steve's magical koolaid.

Kevin
Flame

@Wrong

Do you honestly think hackers have to be told that theres security holes and what they are?

Apple likes to cover up their flaws so people will remain in the dark and rant and rave how secure their product is. And with Apple picking up the market share more and more exploits will be written for those 4 year old holes that were never patched but remain open. Only reason Macs were secure is the reason very few were owned period. But now that people are actually buying them, and not seeing their psychologist instead with that money, they are becoming more of a presence attracting more and more attacks but with Apples policy of ignore it and hope it goes away I get the feeling we'll see mac botnets soon sending viagra spam.

Pile of crap icon for what apples truly are.

EA Europe struggles squeezing out Spore

Kevin

Actually I'm glad...

that they decided to use SecuROM on this it caused me not to pre-order the game. Because al the reviews I read say they changed it completely from what was originally announced, that sounded like it would be the most ultimate game ever, to the disappointment that David Barr above said.

I for one thank you EA, and Sony rootkit v2.0 from saving me from parting with my hard earned money.

PC Gamers get Bill of Rights

Kevin

Whole heartedly agree with most of the points

Especially #5 I still remember when WarCraft 3 came out my computer, at the time, was 2X the recommended system requirements (not the minimum req's), as stated by blizzard, and the game was barely playable with everything set to minimum, and screen resolution set to the lowest supported by my monitor. Now if any mages would cast blizzard or more than 50 units were on the screen at once, my computer would completely freeze for 1 minute and on a lot of occasion lock up from it and require a reboot. I cannot even imagine how unplayable it would be with the minimum system requirements.

And #6,#8-#10 I believe completely in, and are reasons I will not be purchasing Spore when it comes out even though I was really looking forward to it since the day it was announced. I will not install any game that requires SecuROM on the pc and have to beg EA to allow me to play a game I purchased every time I swap a piece of hardware out. And best of all if you uninstall the game SecuROM is not removed and stays silently running in the background causing potential problems with processes and potentially a major security related issues just like other Sony made DRM programs in the past.

Actually I blame the insane crime rate on the high cost of living in Chicago, highest tax rates in america, the lack of decent paying jobs, and highly corrupt Democrats in charge.

Now on the other hand it was kinda funny when they pretty much raided where I went to college and worked originally and slapped so many fines for our 300+ uses of windows 98 and office and we owned 1 license total (the machines had windows 95 licenses still). We got a new IT director the next week.

And like people have said its main failure was the wandering around with a complicated interface that servers no purpose.

@Charlie van Becelaere

My friend installed it on his home built AMD system and got the endless reboot cycle so it was not a OEM only issue. IT seems it was more a issue with the version from windows updates I used the CD image of the update on a exact copy (we bought 3 sets of the same hardware) of my friends pc and it worked fine.

Toshiba Cell-based GPU trounces quad-core CPU

Kevin
Boffin

Question

Was the Toshiba running a encoder that was written from scratch specifically for its chips? (almost would have to be)

And was the Intel Quad core running a generic X86 architecture encoder on vista or was it some optimized code written by Intel?

Because if it was optimized code vs unoptimized code of course the Toshiba would win just like the old optimized Intel, and AMD Divx codec would beat the pants off the generic X86 Dixv codec that was available at the time.

Yea Right...

As someone who lives in Chicago I vote the law should be changed to the family of the person that gets hit, while he is talking on a cell phone and jaywalking at the same time, should be responsible for damages for the car that hit him and the driver should not be held responsible.

That would so solve a lot of traffic jams from morons stopping in the middle of main streets looking at their cell phone's, and help Darwin out.

PS3 sales to surpass Wii's... in four years' time

Kevin
Happy

Maybe

He must basing it on how many current PS3 owners will be on their 3rd or 4th PS3 by then, seeing I already know 3 people on their 2nd PS3 because their 1st blew out already.

Its easy to outsell another system when people have to keep repurchasing the same system, to play the hundreds of dollars they sunk into games, because the damn things blow out.

Personally I own a Wii because I have yet to have a Nintendo system die on me, and I'm counting from the original NES.

Personally I'd say if you want a PS3 wait till revision 15 or so seeing thats how long it took Sony to make a PS2 that don't die from moderate use.

That is a weak analogy but still it should not be criminal to use unsecured wireless. Closest analogy I can imagine would be like being arrested for trespassing for taking a walk in a public park that is advertised as free to the public.

Now the use of a packet sniffer or brute force to hack in is definitely illegal and should be prosecuted.

We all have to remember these unsecured access points are screaming HEY I'M HERE USE ME I'M FREE HERES MY NUMBER to all the computers nearby and the computers are just taking them up on the offer.

Naomi Campbell piles into Vogue

Kevin

Maybe...

The real reason she hasn't been on a cover recently is that the photographer is scared to death of getting his camera lobbed at his head for snapping a bad picture...

Or seeing its Vogue they want women on the cover that epitomize femininity so they can sell beauty products to the women reading it, not women that could pitch a cell phone at peoples heads going close to major league baseball speeds.

Maybe Naomi should go get her own cell phone/personal organizer line that can take 20+ MPH smacks into peoples heads and still function.

iPhone autopsies conducted

RE: Another Autopsy...

Its a very revolutionary design. Its one of the few phones ever made that maximizes the producers profit margins by making the battery almost impossible to change so therefor the average apple zealot will toss it once its battery craps out and buy another overpriced phone to stay in fashion and repeat the cycle.

Hell the incapability to swap anything out for the average apple zealot has done wonders for the mac. Seeing the average person has to go toss the old one in the bin and buy a whole new one to do a upgrade.

The law should not be unclear, nor should it continue to be written by people who have a vested interest in writing the law in an unclear manner because by doing so it keeps the perpetrators of these unclear laws in business.

Its high time for a new law -- one which requires all future laws to be written in plain language and which requires governments to provide on request a plain language replacement for any law whose meaning isn't fully clear to the average member of the public."</quote>

Agreed then we wouldn't need lawyers or have a billion frivelous lawsuits from lawyers who exploit loopholes in the law suing companys left and right takeing up valuable court time from real cases.

Macs are more secure: official

Kevin

no stability in windows?

I dunno I have a win2k box that don't crash. It runs 24/7 and has ran for over a year straight with no reboots or crashes (only reason it went down was we lost power)

I use it as a web, FTP, and an e-mail server and its never been infected by any viruses even though its been on the net and hammered for over 5 years. This is just 2k pro not server or any of the special premium versions of 2000.

so yea windows is unstable and virus ridden if you have no idea what your doing (open e-mail attachments from ppl you don't know), have no idea how to fine tune it, and use dodgy software (Internet Explorer/Outlook).

Now on the other hand my friends mac can't run for 2 days without crapping out
