quite right, especially in the past 5 years or so. I worked on a few iDoohickeies, most of the problems were self-inflicted. "I wanted to see <streaming_service> and I installed this <vpn or plugin or extenstion> because Chrome told me to" is about the average reply.

It's the packaging these devices are "secured" for delivery and display before purchase that will get us in the end. I'm looking at you Apple! I have an old powerbook box full of various cable still kicking around, sadly the computer doesn't boot.

On numerous occasions, I've supervised\witnessed the unboxing of 400± macbooks, that is a site that really makes ya think...(see icon) The Macbooks went on to a broker who sold them second hand.

We once had an Acer Ferrari 3200 come in and would shut down after a short time, and then finally never. my boss put the drive in a freezer(many hours as I recall), and it booted.

One better, I recently shutdown a remote system when the payroll officer was using it! A minute later, I visited the office, they were just putting down the phone(!) The coin dropped immediately... the look on my face must have been priceless! They had added a working day to their schedule, 3 days a week to 4!

I must have missed the memo regarding them changing their working days!

+1 for the Eudora reference. Long ago, it was a go to for a while, Notlook, part of the old office suite was a dog, and we had Exchange, Eudora to the rescue, especially on older less powerful boxes. Dare I mention local .pst files? Arrrrrgh...

This type of philosophy doesn't address the root cause of crime in general. It is way wide of the mark. But that is not what the law enforcement want either, they just want their job to be easy, not non existent.
