Steve Jobs unveils iPad 2

iPad owner here...

It's an instant-on small computer which lives in the lounge. Great for:

- checking stuff on the internet

- games (lots, and many are very, very good)

- multiplayer games with the rest of the family (Marble Mixer is great fun for four)

- education (eg. helping kids with maths homework and need a graphplot: QuickGraph)

- music apps: some of the music apps use the multitouch interface in very imaginative ways

- excellent Apple TV remote app

(quick list off the top of my head)

Ok, most of this you can do with a laptop - but none of this requires a permanent, physical keyboard. And don't forget, this is about the size of a small magazine, is instant-on and has a battery life of over ten hours.

When I got ours there was an initial rush in using it, but it's settled down now to the point where it needs recharging every three / four days. It's just really, really useful.

I'll burn in hell for pointing this out but the Nokia-based jobbie is an 'Apps Store'. Also, it's not Nokia's own, it's 'unofficial'.

Not necessarily. If the production system suffered a corruption due to a memory issue, rebuilding the DB from an RMAN backup with little or no load on the system /may/ produce different results.

Mind you, I've managed Oracle DB's for 18 years and never had one corrupt on me.

Apple prices up iPad for UK

...is anyone surprised at these prices? My guess for the base model was about £420, so £429 is within my expectations.

If you compare Apple store prices at $499 (an iPod Touch) and $699 (a MacMini) with the equivalent UK prices, a UK price for a $599 device comes in at just under £410. Bung on a few quid as it's new and shiny and - hey presto - £420~£430. Besides, wasn't the HP Slate going to be about the same price?

Will I buy an iPad? Yeah, probably. Been a Mac user for four years or so, recently got an iPhone and am pretty impressed with the app store. Looks like a really neat device that the whole family can just pick up and use.
