Good luck displacing Windows 7, Microsoft, it's still growing
Re: Windows 10 = Windows 8.10
TL:DR.... obvious you have not looked properly.. win8.1 can look very much like win7, there is a FREE download for a start bar that will also look like XP..
90% of the computer buying public have NO CLUE, I am shocked by the amount of crap-ware and stuff some have let in, and that INCLUDES business managers!!!
Many businesses are blindly installing MS, leaving their poor workforce to sort out the mess!!!
and win server 2012 is NEEDED to properly mange the network - its win81 shell can be put in classic mode too, so win7 users will be mostly happy..
You have NOT been following how DIFFERENT win10 is from win8x... and have also forgotten that the first release of win7 was about as bad!!! its was SP1 that made it a lot better...
FREE Win10 is not only an apology for how much they messed up, but a PLOY to wipe out lower win versions from the market share ... :D :D

dont panic!!! follow this link.. I have tried it, looks VERY familiar, **seriously**..

If you have saved a theme from win 7, it WILL 'just load' - just dbl click on the file - works great for me...
Re: Company bloat/inertia?
"manage to get so many things right that Microsoft struggles with"
I'm not a programmer or anything like that, but I guess the 'problem' MS has is making sure that **everything** works with their system, BUT also is 'tweaked DOWN' to make sure there is no 'support nightmare'.. otherwise you would not have to 'tweak' IE etc to make it go faster, from the very conservative settings!!
It looks to me that many small process have not changed since win 95, I see the same 'quirks'... it could well be MS laziness..
Linux has no such problem, it can do most from scratch, it does not have to worry, as the 'desktop' is not 'connected like glue' to the OS.. if it crashes, you just load it again!
ON MS, it can bring the lot down, or leave you with a 'desktop' with nothing on it, the only escape being to turn off the PC...

Re: Everything that's new is crap
setting up this new win8 server.. found another stupid thing... NEWB ALERT :) :)
changing the workgroup - instead of saying
"To rename this computer or change its domain or workgroup, click change"
Win8 says "To rename this computer, click change" ...
so... I thought , damned MS!! It has put it somewhere else!!!!! >:(
cue long search for where... Had not even done the 'user access to network' stuff yet...
and guess where I found the workgroup settings??????????????
Re: Everything that's new is crap
and yup!... everyone is getting sick of MS 'moving the goalposts' ALL the time!!! - turning what used to take 2 clicks into 5 clicks.. and hiding away a 'not much used' (except by design geeks!) function so it is not even possible to see it in the normal way.... >:(
as irritating as when you take your car in for full service and upgrade, you find they have moved the gear stick from between the seats to some fancy lever on the dash, that you have to press and slide - they thought it would look nice, and as an after thought add a 'safety' thing so you dont 'accidentally' push it... :(

and a few month later, the boss needs to 'save money' and sacks the IT guys!! Oh and the website, that was being maintained **for free** in house??? the boss decides to get 'a professional company' to do it for £5000 a month!!! :O :O

Re: Good Password(s) inadequate?
chronically simple!! take your exceedingly long password, then think up a 4 or 5 char word that describes what it is used for... eg mike, john, boss, etc, etc.... just add that to the start!!
http://xkcd.com/936/
becomes
bosscorrecthorsebatterystaple
mikecorrecthorsebatterystaple
mystashcorrecthorsebatterystaple
these would take about 600 years at 1000 guesses a second... :)
Re: Regulations?
The consumers are too ill-informed?? well the gov is even worse, some oldtimers not really haveing a clue *what* 'internet' **is** beyond a memo sent round!!
It is not usually them that even 'sees' the email/ webpage - it is their secretary that prints them out for him!!
yes, there are exceptions, but most are like some of the managers where I work, they think paying a guy to sit around waiting for IT problems to occur is a waste of money.. Until I get a desperate call!! LOL
Re: Advice?
OK... multiple firewalls, cisco router (yeah management forced that on us!! ), AZZ* service/hardware, that we are dumping soon, as they think £1000 a month is cheap!!!!
Will soon get Draytek, vmedia business, for only £50 a month!!
*experts will know who... they are being 'IBM' at the mo, and crashing hard...

Re: OpenWRT?
Yup, he's a nerd and most likely 'just happens' to have those pieces lying about... - nothing to do with 'price' :/
Also, the word 'router' has gone though a lot of 'actual meaning' changes in the last few years... eg..
(yes, this is what the confused PC shop calls them!!
- 'router' or 'switch' - I forget, one routes packets by IP to the ONE PC it is for, the other just sends the packets to ALL connected PCs..
- ADSL router - can mean ADSL modem, may have ONLY ONE Ethernet output, telephone socket input!! - may have NO modem, you just plug the output of your modem in, and get 5 rj45s out...
- cable router - Its just a splitter for the output of your cable box, for 5 rj45s out...
The next problem with home made, is the ISP going to 'recognise' it, so its services can run properly???
- then again, I guess nerds wont be using the 'awful' premier BB provider, in preference for one of the 'non-consumer ' ones... :)

well, all i can say is...
( WARNING: Stereotypes ahead!!!! )
some white men have bigger dicks than black men..
some Jewish people have vary small noses...
many big, tall, crewcut, big shouldered guys are the nicest people you will meet...
Many (old or young!) small, skinny, 'weedy' girls are actually strong enough to lift or knock over the guy above!!

Yes, true...BUT Opera never seemed bothered about protecting, or **even improving** its stuff!! their 'speeddial' looked like it was just 'tacked on' to the 'blank page' function... :(

Re: Firefox - Still the only Really Useful Browser.
well here is the full set... could it have had 'skipped' some routines, so seems faster?? I ran the 'profile convert' to copy my ff V28 profile, makes it easier... I have Intel core 7 @ 3 Ghz, 6 G ram..
oh, and the addon, 'fasterfox' on turbocharged... :)

Octane has instructions on https://developers.google.com/octane/howtorun BUT WHERE do you run it???
Re: Firefox - Still the only Really Useful Browser.
so as long as it is fast, it is useful to you then??? ... I think most define 'useful' as 'does what you want' 'does not have massive security issues' 'will render very complex websites properly' 'includes many tools for dev debug, flash & script stopping'...
and even ' functionality not impaired by latest cosmetic update, that ruins usability of previous favourite functions!!!' >:(
now try this, and see how well that works! :)
