Use of Weapons declared best sci-fi film never made

Liveware Problem

Did you seriously just judge a book by its wikipedia summary? For shame...

xenny is right. Astonishingly good story, Use of Weapons, and an amazing book. Make a terrible film though. If you were going to do it, wouldnt it be better implemented as a side plot in a series...An important side plot, but still. And what a series it would be...

@irish donkey - Excession, or Against a Dark Background. But then Use of Weapons was the first one I read.

Hang on

Didn't the tories make a bit of a point of criticizing the nulabour government for being too nanny state, watching over peoples shoulders, etc? Isn't there entire thing about less government interference, more strength to the fittest? Not that I'm condoning people idolizing a lunatic with a shotgun on face-book, there are cinemas to do that in. But free speech = people talking sh*te occasionally, so accept it as part of the joy of being in government. And if more people were bright enough to realize that exercising your free speech and declaring in a public forum that you sympathize with some one who goes around hurting people might get you noticed as someone who does indeed, sympathize with someone who goes around hurting people, the world might be a better place.

Also, surely theres a limit to what 'he was mentally ill' can excuse. I'd rather the nutter with the gun was dead long before he strolled past my kids, with his regrettably distorted perceptions and propensity for melodramatic, narcissistic violence, whatever the reason for his damage.

This may have been covered elsewhere...

But doesn't that statement read as 'The signal was always shit, we've decided that to admit to lying about it is is far cheaper and easier than addressing the issue that the bottom line is: that the thing is beautiful to behold, but doesn't work properly, although its slim design and robust metal case makes it ideal for sliding under wobbly table legs' ?

spare the substance, spoil the style

Hazarding a guess, but if I was making millions of money's on the selling point that my products are so beautifully designed and similar in user interface, and I realized that there were only so many more tricks I could pull out of the design-it-so-it-fits-in-a-toaster-and-make-it-so-no--conscious-thought-has-to-go-into-using-it bag (which is, admittedly, very pleasant), then I would make damn sure that I broadcast the message that anything in the future requiring functionality that breaks my form factor is BAD.

Councils - every criticism applies

Recently worked for a council, not a particularly large one. In addition to all the above being true - lack of knowledge, keeping next years budget, private contractors taking full advantage, doing everything in tiny ineffectual sections, - a massive, massive problem is middle management desperately trying to add a completed project to their cv, at whatever cost, whether or not they have any idea whats going on, and whether the project will do what its supposed to do, or even see the light of day further than the next 'aren't I a good dog' review.

Sad but true, on several occasions I witnessed managers use outside contractors at two or three times the cost rather than allow work to be done by in house staff, purely to take a job out of the control of another manager. In the private sector, business is business, but thats my tax...

So, anyone who doesn't accept what they are given...

...at face value, and is grateful for it, is narcissistic, I suppose. Lets, for instance, apply this to politics. I will accept what the currently empowered establishment tells me, and trust that if there are any flaws in the system, they will quietly sort them out without ever having to cause me any worry or concern whatsoever. To do otherwise would be merely attention seeking.

Methinks somebody just had a lot of work laid wide open by the observation of a fairly critical vulnerability, and isn't very happy.
