While fine for application stacks, operating systems really need to be certified against actual hardware (unless the goal is to have an OS which ONLY runs in some set of Virtualization environments).

As for "technology" companies, it was the original Kodak philosophy which worked well as long as film remained king (and Kodak got the processing $ from paper, chemicals, and often the labwork itself).

if one looks deeply into the razor story (Gillette) its actually pretty convoluted as their original patents (1904) would have been the timeframe for the obvious deployment, but it wasn't until the patents were expiring that they went down this path. But that's fodder for some other forum ;>
