Apple shouldn't bother with TV...

Disintegrationnotallowed
Thumb Down

Hatred is an ugly thing

Remote controls are not a good example of usability, if they were most people would use them and all their functions, I am guessing look at my TV remote that 95% of people I meet press about 20 of the buttons (including the ten number ones).

Could they be better designed, yes, does your blind hatred of apple just make you froth at any apple piece, yes.

Or

Android

1) Are you happy to accept your new device will not be officially supported after the next OS release? Or are you happy to trust that someone on the interwebs provides your updates for you, and you have to support your device yourself like in the "good old days" of PCs. (this one of a few reasons most people buy laptops nowadays)

2) Do you want to have to buy all your apps again.

3) Your data will be sold to the highest bidder, and ads will be your staple

Apple

1) Certain functions will be broken, never fixed and Steve tells you nothing is wrong

2) You can live with the walled cloud Stevie lets you have.

Microsoft

1) You can ever get decent handset/OS mix

Steve Jobs talks Flash, 'lying S.O.B' devs, sex, and Gizmodocrime

Sometimes

I like my iPhone it was better than anything available 12 months ago, I prefer my Macbook to any other laptop I have had.

But he still sounds at least partially mad, like a dog barking at parked cars.

Flash is shit, I don't miss it at all, I mean ever, and the big deal being made about it makes me laugh.

Will next time I buy the latest iPhone? dunno, depends what is available. Will I buy an iPad? No, I have seen one and they are nice, but for me personally no, however I would recommend them to non-techie relatives/friends, as I don't want calls all day and night about antivrus/malware/missing documents, blah blah.

I do wish he would stfu at times though..

Some will be not all!

Anonymous was set by default when I commented on some more "choice" stories (non apple), where I couldn't leave any links (even via pseudonym).

I don't mind people not liking apple or their products, but the FUD is unbelievable on here, as you have said this is a complete non-issue, but I guess "Apple complies with FSF policy and GPL license" is less interesting headline than this story.

Apple users might miss out on open office, other GPL stuff, but what is Apples loss is Androids gain.. Everyone is a winner..

We know that it will be hated by el Reg readers so just fake the results like most sites and make it 89% against, meanwhile Jobsy will sell thousands and buy an island...

Google: Android fragmentation isn't fragmentation

Disintegrationnotallowed

Not sure

Numerous people are complaining that their beloved apps are no longer working under Froyo, the stock answer to this on android forums is that you have to wait for devs to update their apps, so this seems to suggest that backwards compatability is not what you would expect?

Or maybe this is how it is supposed to work too?

'Steve Jobs' switches to Android

Disintegrationnotallowed
Thumb Up

agreed

iphone and android benefit from the competition, would android really have got such a big boost without google wanting to stick it to jobs over flash? most of the performance gains are in an attempt to get flash viable.

Honestly

You want to compare the e55 to an android/iphone type phone? no touch, no apps (yeah please don't try), using winmo (which just has to be the flakiest os), small screen, etc all for £200 less, jeez better to go for the bargain desire from t-mobile if they ship at the price shown on the net.

Disintegrationnotallowed
Thumb Up

actually

Managed to find at this price online, impressive tbh (although with t-mobile), i dont know how they manage it as t-mobile direct want to charge £380 for the phone on this contract, someone must be getting a good deal somewhere!!!

Disintegrationnotallowed
Alert

really

From what supplier, 02, orange, tmobile, vodafone or 3 dont seem to be able to get me that price on that contract?

Impressed you got at that price/length?

Disintegrationnotallowed

which..

Proving the point, £600 for your desire with limited mobile browsing compared to £780 for the iphone with unlimited, add in the £10 a month for unlimited browsing bolt on from orange (comparing apples to apples) and your desire is £840

Disintegrationnotallowed

hmmm

So how much do you get charged if you want 3gb, I cant find any figures for this anywhere? Based on what they charge for unlimited mobile browsing (well up to 1GB per month) then it would be at least £10.. And your 500mb is limited for both handheld and tethering, not 500MB for tethering and unlimited for mobile???

Disintegrationnotallowed

Or

the new Nokia X6 with 16gb with 3000 mins, unlimited texts and wifi/3g for 75 a month (over 18 months) at 1350 (hey kiss my ass koolaiders for that £90 saving)

Dont expect to convert apple haters with simple facts, figures and numbers, they hate apple on principle, not because the facts make any difference

Google mocks Jobs with Flash on Android

Disintegrationnotallowed

from those who have seen it

"Flash content — especially video — can take up to a minute to load, which is more frustrating on a phone than it is on a desktop. And it sucks bandwidth. Our corporate Wi-Fi connection just didn’t seem good enough, and most Flash-heavy sites took a while to load."

"From there, I hopped on to the Sony Pictures web site to check out the trailer for Karate Kid, a re-make starring Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith. I could watch the trailers, pinch-to-enlarge it and check out some of the trivia on the site. But Flash stumbled here, forcing me to reload the site about three times when the trailer didn’t pop up on the screen the way it was supposed to."

"Fashion websites have been big supporters of Flash, using it to showcase videos of their latest collections and runway presentations. Chanel’s site has a video that shows its Cruise 2010 collection. Five seconds into the video, it failed to play and the spinning circle took over the site, forcing me to close it down."

"Flash-based games sites, including Club Penguin, were accessible to the FroYo phone, in stark contrast to the iPhone (and previous versions of Android). But that’s where the fun ended. Loading the content is a frustratingly long process, and the Club Penguin site seemed to challenge the processing power of the phone, so my penguin on the phone couldn’t do much."

Although on the positive side battery usage seems okay about 40% in a couple of hours

Disintegrationnotallowed

ermmm?

and embarrassed it in others (Flash on mobiles may not be as horrific as Apple has implied);

ermm. I would like to see more evidence than the fact they have simply added it?? We know this is a marketing attack by Android and good luck to them, but i won't be counting chickens till we have had real world experiences on a number of android driven handsets

Disintegrationnotallowed

bleugghh

Or when people actually try to use the fantastic capabilities of Flash on their smart new phone it runs every site like a dog, facebook games crash a lot, and their phone runs through battery 3 times faster than normal (even though they have shut down the flash link or are only looking at flash laden advertising), people will get hacked off....

Don't talk to me about flash blocking, nobody, and I mean nobody who I know outside of the IT/Tech savvy world is using flash block unless a friend puts it on for them. When I did it for my ex she whinged coz she had to turn it back on when she wanted to play poxy farmville.

Not having flash is a PITA on my iphone, and would for now stop me getting an ipad tbh, but I prefer that to the nightmare of crashing applications.

The money share thing is nonsense and a red herring, many apps on the Iphone are free, nothing to stop those being done for the iphone too...

Apple MacBook Pro 15in

Disintegrationnotallowed

On Prices

Similar spec (as you can) Dell box: £879, so yes a full £800 cheaper, but in a nasty plastic box.

IBM x201 - i can understand the liking of it but not comparable really different job? Smaller 12" screen, HD intel graphics only, more comparable to the mbp 13" and more comparable to it in price too, so then it comes downs to osx or win7

Disintegrationnotallowed

clearly

You know the answer to this, of course not, however I am hard pushed to find many laptop that does, Dell sell their Alienware boxes with one as an add on, but the same alienware box (in plastic), with Bluray, will cost you £1700 for the same spec.

Personally I cant see any reason why I would want a Bluray in my laptop, if at home I use my Bluray player, if away prefer something more portable to take with me.

Disintegrationnotallowed

Also

Most Mac owners would keep firewire to be honest, as most have a firewire external connection of some kind (cameras, hard disks, etc).

Disintegrationnotallowed

One assumes

that you drive a X Reg Fiesta, it still drives around same as any newer model car, is perfectly adequate, etc.

Or what about your 8 yo 21 inch CRT TV in the living room? A VCR and no DVD? All perfectly adequate.

Sometimes being just OK is not enough.

Like most people I bought an old Mac Pro to start with, then a 3 year old Macbook, and I use it all day everyday, when you spend that much time with a piece of machinery you want to love it, the same way I prefer my car to the one I owned 10 years ago..

2007 Macbook Price at new was around £900, resale value on ebay? around £500 on average...

So costing me around £400 in total

The MBP from 2008? Brand new price around £1700, selling on ebay for around £1100..

Training?????

Most places do not retrain their staff in any move from Office versions, or for Windows versions changes. Certainly my experience suggests not in various migrations, so these huge savings can be ignored.

Not so sure there is lots of knowledge on IT systems, many people repeat parrot fashion what they have always done, try getting someone to rewrite a department spreadsheet if there are vb scripts or macros, you would be surprised how many spreadsheets were written years ago when somebody left...

This isn't to say it shouldn't be done, but those are not the reasons to do so. Also many large organisations outsource the desktop, and get charged a fee by the outsourcer per seat, FOSS may arguably cut some costs, but requiring large skill bases in the backend will bump things up.

A sensible coherent proposal is needed, with proper migration plans, by people who know what they are doing, this costs money and most people just don't see the value...
