Put down your coffee and admire the sheer amount of data Windows 10 Creators Update will slurp from your PC

You can still opt out

Too many comments to check if already mentioned, but you can still opt out. Sling some registry keys, kill and lock some services, mess with local policies -- it's doable. Just sucks for the average user that it's not available as a simple toggle switch.

Tl;dr -- MS ain't getting anything from my systems.

Apple to buy Sony? Good one!

Funny. Seriously tho, i think Sony's getting too Apple-y in their practices already -- no need to make it worse.

The real question is

Forget the fanbois

I don't like apple's practices and attitude -- on that i believe we agree. That being said, i like some of their products (ipod and ipad, for example) and to me there's no greater (additional) satisfaction than to bypass apple's anal (and imaginary) control in order to bend them to my will.

That and, hey, they're cool gadgets.

4chan launches DDoS against entertainment industry

Umm.. o-kayyy, but...

... what should be done about the cretinous flailings of the RIAA, the MPAA and that idiot firm doing the DDoS-ing from India?

Or is all that fine and dandy?

Road test: putting the iPad to work

Just a note on hardware possibilities

My ipad's jbroken and with a nifty application called iFile i can mount any SD card or USB key on the device (with the help of the photo kit hardware).

Tho i do understand why something like that wouldn't be mentioned here -- imho the device should be able to do these tasks without having to be modified.

RIM proposes crypto forum to dodge India BlackBerry ban

I tend to agree here

It's a question of principle, i.e. i don't want anyone snooping in on my stuff (banal to the outsider as it may be). Besides, what irks me is the fact that the people/crimes all these measures are aimed at will (a) be warned by the public debate and (b) find other ways to hide their shady business.

US legalizes jailbroken iPhones

Hats off for rationality has won a rare victory.

Over the lips and through the gums, watch out stomach, here it comes!

They can still be mine (ALL mine!)

I agree and i too like to "own" my stuff. And that is why i may jailbreak a device. By severing certain control ties with the manufacturer/provider, i am able to, for example, add an actual file manager to that device and backup my data (ebooks, etc.). It can also allow me to refuse unwanted updates that are either of no interest or will wrest control from the rightful hands of the device's owner (i.e., me).

What i'm saying is that there's a subtle tangibility to virtual things that's not always seen or recognized and that these things CAN be *ours* if we want them to (and with a little elbow grease).

Apple sued over hot iPad shutdowns

Interesting point, but...

... aside from the obvious display problems, i would expect a device to keep on operating.

I'd be more than a little irked if my phone was unavailable in an emergency because i'd spent a little time in sunlight (the phone being a similar take-anywhere device -- especially if one considers the iphone) .

To put into context, sitting outside it's happened that i've left my phone lying around on, say, a picnic table in direct exposure. It kept right on working when needed.

3D films fall flat

3D isn't a bad thing, but it's not what makes a movie great. A movie has to hold it's own without cheap tricks -- instead of investing in slight-of-hand, they should probably concentrate on making flicks that aren't garbage (like a majority of offerings in recent years).

Fanbois end Judas Phone 'Death Grip' with, um, SIM tape

I agree in principle...

... that a product you've just purchased should not require you to gussy it up like a cheap whore for it to work.

That being said, i still think it's an ingenious idea.

One thing wrong here....

I'm not going to add to the flaw/not-flaw debate, but i will say that this is NOT a "new product".

It's the continuation of an existing line.

Yes, a new generation of product is allowed it's debugging period -- that's only fair, it's like that for just 'bout everything -- but in this case there seem to some very major problems that previous experience should have helped avoid in the first place.

Apple iPhone forums gripped by deleted thread paranoia

That's all fine for devs, but...

It's simply a matter of logical pragmatism when it comes to being an internet user:

Google versus Facebook: stop your photocopiers

Utter nonsense

I totally agree. At the risk of sounding paranoid, i don't want someone else to have final say on my stuff/data/apps.

Not to mention that Internet/digital infrastructure is much too fragile at this point in time for us to rely on it as our main computing platform/OS (from both a hardware and software point of view). If public wifi was omnipresent and the infra rock solid, then perhaps.

But certainly not now.
