Falklands are too far south (roughly as far south of the equator as London is north of it). No use.
What about Montserrat, Saint Helena or Ascension islands? Saint Helena is building an airport, and Ascension is basically military only. Montserrat may be a little too volcanic.
GPS can be turned off a or a completely new coding system introduced any time that the USA DoD
feels like; with so much stuff depending on global navigational and time distribution it makes some
sense for other countries to have their own satnav.
However to me 4 systems (GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo) seems excessive.
If corporations claim the rights of people I think that they should have the
possibility of being jailed (e.g. forced to cease trading for some time) or
even executed (wound up with all assets going to the state) for heinous
crimes.
That would make shareholders very wary about who gets to be directors!
In Very Long Baseline Interferometry we record digitised noise from the sky, (so it is really
random gaussian noise with embedded timestamps). At one stage these were recorded
to VHS videotapes and customs people had a hard time crediting that we were not up to
something funny. You could only use it when you correlate one set of tapes with another
set from another radio telescope.
