MS vs Linux

Seem this is about MS vs Linux, so passion comes into play. I do believe governments should try to save where possible but at the same time schools have to prepare kids for the real world. I would like my kids to leave school understanding the basics of what MS has to offer but also what Linux has to offer so they can make informed choices for themselves not become MS Clones or Linux clones. The desktop / PC Era is showing a decline we are seeing smart devices, virtual desktops etc etc...I would like my kids to understand these technologies not just be MS Clones. Teach them about Computing SW, HW and the market as a whole, most teenagers can manage office products (whatever they are) better than the teachers who teach them..

So what you saying is why learn English as Spanish is the most spoken language across the world. We should only learn Spanish then. Let me also point out that the more common used operating system is not Windows but Linux in our new Kids world. These are all Linux Based (OSx, Android, Ubuntu). Yes I even have clients who use no MS products in there entire business, only Linux and products like Open Office.

MS Agreements can not prevent you from using freeware, they are hoping given the choice no one will use Open Source...they know the easy route is the most commonly chosen...then when the School system exceeds the agreed upon numbers of products they can come in, audit and demand payments for these infringing licenses to match the rest of the agreed contract.

MS has it's place but the market has moved on to "Smart Devices" most of these do not use MS Office my kids can use Polaris Office equally well as they can use MS Office. I say stop teaching kids how to use MS Products and teach them about Computing.

I do agree with some of the article about the lock in long term costs, but am curious why the biggest provider of ELA's and also the largest auditor of their ELA's is not also included in this article (Microsoft), or is this just an accepted that you have no way out so why bother to include Micorosft and only the handful of clients in the world that call themselves, Linux shops are free of this or are they also in some way tied into one of the large Linux Shops with and ELA.

Guess some reading is in order - So many hidden costs in MS and you forgetting it is not what does it cost but what does it cost to run an application... have a look and they even publish a PDF so you can see how it is worked in case they cheating in their favor. Yes I do think 2012 will have an impact as it's performance improvements will help reduce the HW cost to run Hyper-V vs VMware.

Yes the equivalent trails in Korea both Apple and Samsung got punished. Interesting that they ruled all in favor of the Apple patents but ignore all the counter sing for 3G infringements that Apple is guilty of. Maybe Sammy should just demand that 3G be removed from iPhones :)....

I think every company has the right to protect intellectual capital Apple may have won and Samsung may have lost what I would like to know is what did this cost the American people....the way I see it Xerox should sue them all as it had touch screen in it's printers 20 years ago.

Apple has been awarded a patent like that for the wedge shape of a laptop....to me innovation is the apps I use not the shape of my buttons or phone....

I note in your article that Microsoft includes this. An implied is that no other Hypervisor can...Well every other hypervisor be it XEN, ESXi, KVM etc etc can achieve the same functionality while also ensuring no propriety lock in to there systems. Yes it may not be built into the hypervisor but is available even at no cost if you are happy to use open source solutions like OpenStack. I would like to see a follow up option exploring all the possible Local Storage (Virtualization Solutions)

According to these reports the cost does start to seem a bit high, but I agree with John Gibson's comments. If you are serious about your production environment then those features have to be considered. Also having read this report from a number of sources I see that the some things are not shown, MS ECI pricing requires a minimum of 50 Processors yet the reports use 4 so value is skewed.. also when showing growth MS do not account for VM Ratio to Core so the MS pricing stays linear but what about the HW required to drive that growth in VMs. While I understand that MS marketing is used to attacking to win...we as IT consumers need to start looking behind the published statements...Also this same report refers to the Private Clouds on and on...so have VMware and MS stand up and show us how many case studies or working implementations they have..this would be a more true reflection of what is going on...It is not the vendor but the consumer that can tell the whole truth ugly or nice.

This is business to the 2 big players cover the largest virtualization players and you can make money with bundled solutions. When basically people could probably build the samne solution using any Network provider, Storage Provider and VIrtual Provider...just sounds nice when you say "Certified Solution" touches nicely on companies Support Fears...

IF we passing blame all around why not the customer whose helped slow inovation down by demanding lower costs and using the large vendors for competing bids. Profits in x86 market are small compared to the large RISC Unix market, profits forced down by customers playing the vendors against each other. IBM's dropping of its desktop division was a good casualty of this, yes they gave it nice business names like not our core business or other find terminology but basically it became to expensive to produce a Thinkpad...Lenov showed that by producing as long as the agreement was for then dropping it fast...Compaq the great x86 player who just got eaten by HP why innovate when you can buy.

Sorry but there is lots of blame to go around least of which I think is the virtualisation vendors be it VMwarw ro Microsoft.

This is a pointless argument I use all three of these machines in my day to day life, Yes weird all 3 and I am yet to notice any real benefit of one over the other unless I consider looks. Then MAC takes it, but for solidness the ThinkPad T42 wins as I drag it around the office from room to room never closing but just hanging onto the lid. Lenovo has managed to keep some of the ThinkPad solid build depending on the model I use a T400. Yes the have very different roles for me based on OS selection, so no one better than the other just how you judge it.
