SECOND favourite ? That acid-fuelled yellow bastard ridden by a bunch of hippies as most definitely been usurped!

And don't get me wrong, the amount of time I spent watching that thing while acid soaked myself means it holds a special place in my heart. But anything even slightly associated with David Attenborough comes in at #1

Let em do it.

Let em all remove end to end encryption, put in a backdoor, whatever.

Then when they all flock to a service that *does* offer that, maybe then they'll bloody realise it's not the product they are loyal to, it's the capability of the product.

Bit of an eejit but..

..this is super disturbing.

And by 'bit' I mean 'window licking champion for 5 years running' - I'm not a smart man by any means. However, even a dunce like me can see how gross this is, and what sort of world it is leading into.

It feels like Trump is normalising a cult of personality; a man so obsessed with opinion and criticism that any slight against him is met with the full force of any number of lawsuits.

And now he's the president of the bloody US, in a funny time in history - with liberals so confident smelling their own farts that they can't see that not everyone shares their ideals, facing off against conservatives recently energised by a man who says all the right words to validate all their prejudice. It feels like sanity is going to become the new fundamentalism

Two-thirds of TV Licensing prosecutions at one London court targeted women

Andy Tunnah

It's HOW much?!

Honestly didn't know how much a TV license is. There is no way in HELL I'd pay that much, even if I did watch the Beeb

(I don't have a license because I don't watch TV, nor do a I stream it. Torrent it a lot though..)

For a minute there I thought I was reading a sincere post from reddit. That is A+ writing, very nearly got me HL+S'erd

Andy Tunnah

So will I be barred ?

I don't use social media - no twitter, snapchat, instagram etc.

I *do* have a facebook, but it's under a fake name (if I wanted to keep in touch with you after school I would do so), and I only add very close friends, people I'm in regular contact with, and it it is so I can speak exactly like I would face to face, so as you can guess, my posts are all the sort of things mates say only to other mates.

If I went to the states would I get into trouble for not having anything ? My facebook is absolutely non-identifiable (I don't have any family members on it - I don't know about you lads but it doesn't matter how old you are, you don't swear in front of your mam, it applies to 32 year old me, it'll apply to 62 year old me god willing, and my lexicon is...quite scottish, so I have no family on there at all)

I'm planning on doing a US trip in 2018, purely as a tourist, but I'll be buggered if you're gonna get a chance to see what I think about my mate ben's latest bird.

Re: If I said the next thing a say will be a lie and the last thing I said was the truth

Kind of related. but this is how I deal with my encryption keys to remove the chance of being forced to reveal them

I have my encryption key on a USB device, and a copy in my encrypted volume. I mount my encrypted volume, and shred the USB drive (er, software shred, I'm not made of money).

When I need to unmount, I copy it back to the USB. So if anyone were to come knocking, force unmount or simply flicking the plug makes the volume inaccessible and I can't be compelled to reveal what I don't have.

I will admit this has bitten me in the arse...twice...through the stupidity of an adorably excitable dog and her ability to trip a power cable. But the price you pay for security and all

Superior nerdities needed

Hey I'm not on the same level as a lot of you lads so can one of you more experienced folks explain to me why you would pick these over an nVidia part ?

The P100 reported on earlier does 5.3 teraflops DP, these do considerably less at 3.46 for the top-end part. I know there's more to a part than that but talking purely metrics, why would these be chosen over the green team ?

Not a Ti

The latest range of nVidia cards really screwed up, because the 970 was so good, the 980 they released along side it wasn't worth the extra money..especially because everyone knew the Ti was coming, the full fat card.

This meant that nobody was buying 980s, even though they were great cards, they just weren't worth the extra over a 970, or the saving over a Ti. So systems ended up putting them in, as they were a great card, and more importantly the people who buy systems just seen the number and thought it was the top end.

Long story short, it's the 980, not the Ti, and a 500w PSU is fine

Researcher claims Facebook tried to gag him over critical flaw

Andy Tunnah

Whoa

Now this was a rollercoaster of a story! Gotta say though, I think facebook were in the right. Purely because it seems like this guy was constantly just BEGGING for a loophole or opening. I don't blame him mind, the idea of showing up facebook and the like is a wet dream many of us...dream of (shut up, prose is not my thing).

I truly believe there was mischief at heart in this...not malice though. But then again it isn't a stretch to think he thought he was doing a public service, showing the absolute abysmal security measures the people in charge with 105% of the population's social media (er...maths too) take.

Who's right on crypto: An American prosecutor or a Lebanese coder?

Andy Tunnah

Nope, don't care

I find the examples given deplorable, as I expect (hope?) everyone else does, but I just will never support broken encryption.

You can tell me all the horror stories you want, but at the end of the day it will just never be worth it, because while crimes and examples are something ready to display the power of the "for" argument, the power of encryption means we don't have any examples of the "against" column, and that's what I'll always be rooting for. The day where someone can show "but dissident was tracked, his phone hacked, and now is strung up in the gallows" is a day we've failed.

People suck, crime sucks, but it isn't just a phone that makes a case, and I truly believe more harm than good will come out of broken encryption.

Andy Tunnah

Could do with some advice

I'm on the verge of upgrading my PC into a 4K rig, but instead of a monitor I'm going to be using a TV - I recently moved to gaming on a TV and after a while I no longer noticed the fidelity loss from coming from a high end monitor. So I'm going to get a 4K TV, as 4K really needs to be big screen to properly enjoy it.

But the reason is also because 4K TVs are cheap as chips, Costco has some cracking sets in the 600 quid range. Will this HDR palaver really make that much of a difference, or is it more for films ? This'll be mostly used for gaming, and any films displayed on it will be er...downloaded.
