Google throws secret auto-updater to open sorcerers

Pete
Black Helicopters

So uninstall it?

Its right there in Add/Remove Programs.

Of course, you've still got to go picking through your hard drive and startup to delete the files that are left behind to stop them running, but its by no means an essential program to have running. None of the Google apps (Google Earth, Picasa and Chrome (last time I tried it anyway)) complain about its absence or lack functionality.

re: Ron Hughes

I know at least 10 people with blu-ray players. Let me guess, you're one of the supporters of the other lesser format? Or one of the blind people who can't tell the difference between DVD and blu-ray.

BBC mobile gets pimped

But

I'm happy with the regular BBC layout on my phone, it looks fine using Opera. The mobile version just hides the features of the 'real' pages making it harder to find what you want.

Hahah, no.

I don't think so. I already pay out my arse for a 20mbit connection, why should I pay more?

At least I can get it through the cable telly for free (at the moment).

Firm touts anti-radiation chip for phones

Sounds like crap

Surely all this does is attenuate the signal a little and reduce the signal strength? Wrapping your phone in tin-foil probably works just as well for a fraction of the price.

I'll stick with the industry standard thanks, and not some ropey half arsed office clone.

At least theres one good thing with V8

They've given us an uninstall option for Mobileme.

It would've been even nicer to be asked if you wanted it installed, but that isn't the Apple way, is it...

(Uninstalling Mobileme and Bonjour are the first things on my list after installing iTunes)

PC Gamers get Bill of Rights

@ alistair millington

Steam works fine, theres nothing wrong with it. If you'd bothered to read the instructions you might've discovered that you don't need an internet connection to play any of the games and they can be played offline just fine.

So before you bash a platform, get your facts right.

MS beefs up WinXP Pro's anti-piracy nagware

Pete
Gates Halo

Linux Sucks, Windows forever.

People are pirating XP and not using Linux because well, Linux is rubbish.

Awful software, awful hardware compatability, awful usability.... just awful.

Most people, me included, just want an OS that works and offers decent software to use. Linux offers neither of these. Last time I tried to install Ubuntu my network card didnt work, I had no acceleration on my video card and playing video was an utter nightmare.

I fixed the network card issues (two lines were the wrong way around in some conf file) after a couple of hours of googling, I still can't get the video card drivers to play happy and the shitty software situation will never improve.

I went back to Windows and got some work done.

Oh no boo hoo it comes with Vista installed.

Big deal, install XP or Lunix if you're a nerd. If you care enough to hate Vista you'll certainly have the technical ability to do the job I'm sure.

A third of Vista PCs downgraded to XP

Pete
Thumb Down

Downgraded myself recently

Downgraded my sister's laptop to XP from Vista recently, everyone who uses it is much happier now it runs at a reasonable pace.

As for the number of people who downgraded to a flavour of Linux from Vista, i'll put money on it being less than 1%.

I'm hearing the Windows Server 2K8 argument touted a lot, but it seems that by the time you've made the 'tweaks' to make it a usable desktop OS you've basically converted it into Vista. Why bother?

Burma hits satellite TV where it hurts

Its trivially easy to block other radio stations by jamming the frequency with your own broadcast. You don't have to take their radios, just broadcast what you want over the top. To be honest it wouldnt surprise me if theyre already doing just that.

Virgin Media network collapses nationwide

Fine here

I'm in the north west and I didnt get so much as the tiniest interruption in service. In fact, I took the opportunity to download those Linux ISOs i'd been meaning to get hold of faster than I'd ever done before on a Sunday evening :)

Virgin Media eases off bandwidth throttling

I get 20Mbit easily

... Off peak anyway. And I don't believe for one second that it only applies to the top 5% of people, I download bugger all compared to some people (i've seen figures of 1TB+ a month from some, I don't manage that in a whole year) but I still get capped come 3GB and 4PM when I do feel the need to stretch my downloading legs.

The new caps don't sound like easing off at all, I don't think anyone will be fooled by this announcement.

Mobile TV to reach 120 million users by 2012: report

Pete

I'm sure by 2012...

... If you wanted to watch TV on your mobile, chipsets for receiving normal freeview will be small and efficient enough to integrate into a phone.

Of course, this will probably never happen, because why then would we pay the networks for the privilege of receiving DVB-H broadcasts?

And I would use 3G if the price for data wasn't the obscene price it is, £2/MB on O2.

Halo 2 on PC

Will install on XP, it doesn't need DX10 to play. If you want multiplayer however, thats where you will need Vista. But there are plenty of other, better multiplayer games on the PC anyway so I don't know why you'd bother anyway.

Competition Commission to probe Sky's ITV buy

See if I care

As a Virgin Media customer, I couldn't care less if Sky bought out ITV and made it Sky exclusive. I haven't missed Sky One/News/etc one bit and I won't miss ITV if it goes.
