WTF?

They keep sending me junk email about how I am invited to their "Fibre Optic Event" as a "VIP". Unfortunately I still can't get bloody infinity in my area. Thanks BT!

Windows RT still haunted by the ghost of Microsoft's 2001 tablet fiasco

Seb123
WTF?

The problem with all of these touch devices is that they are great for certain things, but incredibly clumsy and useless at other things. By other things I mean the type of work that 95% of people actually need to do on a daily basis. Call me a primitive caveman, but quite often even a mouse gets in the way and it's much faster to do things by keeping your hands on the keyboard and remembering short cuts, unless you're the type that can only type with one or two fingers at the same time and needs to hunt for the keys.

A touch screen on a computer does not bring anything revolutionary for the ordinary office worker, apart from having to clean the dirty smudges off at the end of each day. Some companies get this. Microsoft, on the other hand, noticed that people enjoy this touch-screen malarkey and have decided to herald it as the new era for their operating system.

It would be nice to see somebody attempt to create a new UI style that isn't just a copy of the Xerox GUI and which brings some real improvements to how we interact with computers in terms of productivity and ease of use. A touch screen interface does not make 95% of us more productive. It's easier for people that don't understand the difference between bits and bytes, but even they quickly realise that typing more than two sentences on a touch screen, or a tablet keyboard with shallow key depth, sucks monkey balls.

A desktop, or a laptop, does not require a touch interface.. It's an ergonomic nightmare, but companies have become enamoured by it. It all reminds me of the new Samsung TVs with the stupid voice and gesture recognition control. WTF is the point when you can still switch channels or change the volume quicker by pressing a button. That's not innovation. That's just moving sideways in order to release "new" products with "new" features in the absence of real innovation.

Ms Anna Leach can be accused of many things, but I think she would take exception to being called an Apple fanboy, since she certainly isn't that. She can't resist taking a dig at Apple with every opportunity.

Re: Shameful Trolling

I guess it depends on how you read whether you have "Must hate Apple" glasses on, but I really didn't see any of what you saw. No, I am not an apologist - I don't particularly care enough for Apple or any other computer manufacturer to get angry about trivial things like a humorous article.

Some of you need to step back from the monitor and chill out for 10 minutes, instead of bashing the keyboard in anger. If there is one site that does not particularly care for Apple in its reporting, it's the reg.

I think it's meant to be a humorous anecdote.

Microsoft: It's not Metro, it's Windows 8

Seb123
FAIL

Do they think people are stupid?

"Microsoft has tried to spin the change by claiming that Metro had only been a code name used by developers all along, and that it had never intended to use the term with the general public."

Why bullshit like this when it's all over the place and was mentioned externally to the public on countless occasions? Do they think people are stupid?

Seems like they still need to run a big copy and replace all over the place...

'“I don’t see this will impact HTC’s success. It is a very consumer targeted brand and people are looking at Windows 8 as an enterprise solution so even if it’s excluded that’s not HTC’s target market,” said Chau.'

Windows 8: Not even Microsoft thinks businesses will use it

Seb123

Even the fan boys say no thanks

John Dvorak's review on Market Watch is quite an amusing read, since he is a bit of self-confessed MS fan boy.

When the fan boys call your new product an unmitigated disaster, then you know you have a problem.

'The real problem is that it is both unusable and annoying. It makes your teeth itch as you keep asking, “Why are they doing this!?” '

'What is this departure based on? It’s based on the pipe dream that the unsuccessful user interface used by Windows Phone will turn into a success on the tablet — to such an extreme that people will also demand it on the desktop, so all the platforms can have the same look and feel.'

'The public and enterprise users are going to demand Windows 7 throughout 2013 and until Microsoft gives up on this soulless Metro interface and gets a new design team, fast'

That covers how I feel about it. I've tried using it myself and it's just cumbersome and annoying. The Metro UI looks like a web page. In fact, it reminds me of Active Desktop. Anyone remember that and IE 4? Good times.

I need to multitask, but Windows 8's Metro won't let me

Windows 8 release preview imminent

Thumb Down

Re: Windows 8 Preview

I would take anything you see on MS sites with a pinch of salt. They have plenty of product pages where there are fake tweets and other social media goobledy gook where made-up people pretend to like these things and tell us how awesome their experience has been so far.

Seb123
WTF?

Touch interface?

Does MS really expect us to all buy touch screens for our desktops and use Metro like that? You're supposed to sit about an arm's length away from your monitor so... well, um... I cannot reach the damn thing without stretching, leaning forward or bringing the monitor closer. All of those things are not good for me in one way or another.

Now, as a fun exercise, pretend you're going through the normal tasks that you would perform with a mouse during the day, but do it with your hand as if you're touching the screen and holding your arm out. Do it just for a couple of minutes. Tell me how awesome it is?

Never mind how great dirty smudges on monitors look.

Sony KDL-55HX853 55in 3D LED TV

Seb123

Re: Let's get it over with now

It depends on how far away from the screen you sit. A 55" 1920x1080 screen is not made for viewing from one foot away.

Seb123

Re: ... and the verdict of the User Interface jury is...

I don't have a problem with the with this set's UI in terms of usability and navigation. Unfortunately it runs in quite a sluggish manner. Hopefully a software update sorts that out.

Re: Backlit - Edge or direct?

It plays most of my mkvs (lots of DVDs and BRs - movies and tv shows).

I didn't have a problem with DVD mkvs, but some BR mkvs it couldn't decode. I think it was ones where the movie format is VC-1, iirc.

Despite the lack of direct back lighting, the 2D picture quality and back light uniformity is very good. Dark scenes with a single light object look great without bleeding.

Google warns against ISPs hard on web filth

Seb123
WTF?

Let's get real

There are 12 year old kids having children of their own so I don't think pornography is going to shock them too much. Nor does pornography have anything to do with that particular issue. You have the government to thank for making it attractive to have children and, in particular, if you're single. It's practically like winning the lottery.

If somebody really wants to "think of the children", then perhaps it's time to start looking where the actual problems are, instead of going after the easy pickings and low-hanging fruit?

Seriously. Why is it that the average person can't see through this bullshit? The UK has real economic and social issues and it's not going to get better. It won't be fixed by censoring pornography.
