Motorola Milestone 2 Android smartphone

Took long enough

Hum, this phone has been out since September and 'The Reg' has only just reviewed it, been on holiday guys?

This is certainly a phone I have placed on my list, depends upon which carrier is willing to supply it, £410 is a lot of money for such a device though, so that would rule me out of buying it sim free :(

Mobile Broadband an option?

I did not see if you have said anything about your mobile signal quality? I assume you have considered mobile broadband? Well ok that is a kind of contradiction of terms as its not exactly quick, but at least its 'some' connection, better than nothing. I had to resort to this while waiting for my phone line to be connected (took 3 months! isn't BT wonderful!) I tethered my mobile to my notebook to get internet access, good enough for email and facebook :)

You have got to love BureauPrats

Who are happy for you to give your old PC gear to Charity, but you are not allowed to give them away to your staff, how utterly ridiculous!

Nokia cuts staff, fiddles with E7

If only other manufactures did this

The thing is that in all the rush to push phones out the door, quality control and user testing seems to go out the window. If only HTC did a bit more of this on their Desire Z then maybe they would have spotted the hinge problem and solved it. I think other manufactures need to take stock and ensure their product is perfect before throwing it out the door, I'd rather buy a phone that will actually last the 2 year contract I will have to sign up to (note that is one year Longer than the warranty!) so I want a phone that has been tested and quality controlled, sadly that's not the Desire Z! :( but maybe the E7, as Nokia make good solid reliable phones.

One For All SV9380 Freeview HD indoor aerial

Digital TV is a con

Never had any problems with Analogue signal, now forced to switched to digital and have to put up with freezing video and sound drop outs even with full signal strength, not at all impressed with this freeview nonsense. Tried 2 aerials (approved for Digital TV, etc etc), both give the same results. I live in a good signal area. I'd rather have 5 watch-able channels that 30 un-watch-able ones. Quantity over quality, the wonders of the modern world :(

London Transport plans Oyster bypass

leona 2

I can see

lots of claims for lost / stolen cards, when people find they've been used on the transport network, so it will not ask for a PIN or a Signature oh how so secure! I would not trust my card on this, at last with Oyster, if card gets stolen, you can replace it, and they can only get so far. But once someone has cloned your bank card, they could go round all month till you notice the payments on your statement, notify your bank, wait a life time for the system to cancel your card, of course the transports system will not be up to day, so will still allow the cad to be used, etc etc, err no I don't think so!

Product Image - fail

I also noticed that the picture seems to show a '3G' icon and signal strength bar, which clearly this model would not have? I guess the image is for 'illustration only' a?

OS?

Erm the website it states OS: Google android 1.7.4

Really? I thought there was either 1.5, 1.6. 2.0, 2.1 or 2.2, so where did 1.7 come into it? Strikes me as one of those dodgy imports. I may be tempted to get one though, as a eBook reader.

Sad, isn't it.

That facebook goes off the air for a few hours and the world grinds to a halt, you know there was life before facebook, and scary as it sounds, there will be life afterwards!

Desire Z

Been seeing details about this for ages, on different sites, strangely NOT this one, hummm.

Anyway, looks good, its about time HTC bought out another keyboard phone, its been a while since the HTC G1/Dream, what has taken them so long? Anyway I hope 'The Reg' can get their hands on one and give it a good review. I need a phone with a hardware keyboard, and there has been a real lack of these till late, now we are spoilt for choice, the Moto Milestone 2, Nokia E7 and now this, lets find out which is best :)

Public sector earning more than private, but less than last month

Boiling blood

This kind of TWODDLE makes my blood boil, what a load of Poppy Cock, I work in public sector and get paid 25-30% LESS than I would in the private sector. I work in public sector because I'm disabled and the Private sector doesn't want to know (I've tried, MANY TIMES). One of the only good things about public sector is the pension, but first you have to get there, they keep moving the age of retirement, then they change the amount you get, (the 85 year rule has gone, for example), I wish they'd leave us Public Sector employees alone, and look closer at the financial and legal sectors, who are making a killing. Most public sector employees earn LESS than the national average, its only the 'top flight' manages etc that push the stats up.

Restrict your info.

Be careful who you add as a 'friend' in the first place, or create groups for 'friends', 'best friends' or 'wonabe friends' and restrict your information or updates to the appropriate group.

Don't put your address in your profile (do people actually do that?).

By ya, posting, I'm not home, come and help yourself, isn't cleaver.

But at the end of the day, crims will find a way, whatever you do. Sadly.

Ten Essential... Budget Compact Cameras

Thumb Down

Meaning of BUDGET!

Geez, do you understand the meaning of BUDGET! Clearly not, I wouldn't spend that much on a camera, the most I spent was £79, (6 years ago).

When you say budget I would expect to see offerings from £50 to £100, not £99 to £150! We are in a recession! Who has that kind of money to splash on cameras! (clearly not me!).

So us girls can though right?

because it says "shall not keep 'his' waggon" Which doesn't seem to cover the female gender, so us girls can 'drive' whatever we like on the pavement then :)

Hillier appeals to transgender community to save ID cards

leona 2

Slight Amendment

Sorry I thought I needed to correct the above, transgendered people can not get a new (corrected) birth certificate without the Gender Recognition Certificate, but you are correct that they can change passport and driving licensee, they need a letter from the psychiatrist's letter and either a statetory Declaration or Deed Poll of change of mane.

Which would mean they would be fully 'out' anyway. As part of the treatment they have to live 2 years in their new gender, before surgery or getting theur GRC, so would only have one ID, so the whole thing is a NON ISSUE!

Dell punts SIM-free Streak

WTF?

But I wanted the PINK one!

So where is the choice of colours we where promised then? Its all, you can have it in any colour as long as its black? Come on! I don't want a boring black device, we need colour in our lives, and now. :)

BT boss brands Britain illiterate

leona 2
Unhappy

not surprised really.

Just look around on any internet channel, facebook, even this forum, people can not be bothered to take the time to correctly spell words or even string a sentence together. Even browsers have a built in spell checker, they are too lazy to use it! Just listen too the role models around, I mean the characters from Little Britain are not far wrong "Ya but, no But", standards have been dropping for years, everyone can pass a test now, because it wouldn't be 'PC' to fail anyone. Where my partner works is a total disgrace (not IT but still) they will take on anyone, doesn't matter if they swear, talk about their private 'love' lives, belch, sulk like children, and these are grown adults! (you'd think), while they are supposed to be looking after disabled children, its disgusting. Professionalism is a dying trend.

Dell Streak Android tablet phone

leona 2

but why would you.

But you could only buy 1 apple device, this doesn't the job of too, so in effect its buy 1 get 1 free, and why would you want to buy an apple anyway! :)

leona 2

Does it have, and is it accesibile, now that really would be a first!

I didn't see in the review, any mention of a g-sensor or hardware compass, so will it change from portrait to landscape when tilted? You assume it would, but I don't assume anything these days!

I note with interest that someone commented about low vision users, I am legally blind, though have a small amount of vision, I find my current phone (HTC TyTN2) Impossible to use without a magnifier so have been testing Android on it, but noticed that Android uses small fonts with no way to increase them, though it does include accessibility and speech features with others don't, but will need to have 2.2 to take advantage of the latest accessibility features. I would love to try one though.

isn't it funny.

That they can run cable out to the middle of the countryside, but not 5 meters (yes 5 Meters!) to MY HOUSE! deeming it to be 'too expensive', to lay the cable. but yet they can find the cash to run cable out to the middle of no where! I live in a city, the cable run right across the front of the row of houses. I will not use an unladylike word to describe me feelings about that! Its not the broadband I'm bothered about, I miss the cable TV! (sky just doesn't cut it, and its too expensive).

what tripe.

Oh dear, is this the level of 'The Reg' authors integrity? Getting stories from the Daily Star, I thought The Reg was the place to come for genuine IT related stories and reviews, but what do I find today, this Tripe, and what a load of twoddle it is. I hope this 'Lester' doesn't consider himself as serious author putting out articles like this, no sorry, not the sort of thing I expect to find here, keep stories printed in the Daily Star/Sun whatever, there, they have no need to be repeated here.

Nerd alert: First Lucid Lynx Ubuntu beta fun

leona 2

Well...

He does have a point, there is quite a lot that 'doesn't' work out of the box, DVD playback anyone? Yes you can 'get' it to work, but its not 'out of the box' like quite a lot of things that are 'standard' in other OS's.

The overall GUI is very clunky, still 80's looking, quite Win 3.1 in window design, this doesn't seem to have moved on in years, whereas Win7 and Mac OS are light years ahead. Yes again you can jazz it up by adding stuff and tweaking with the settings, if you have the time, but again not out of the box.

After a hard day at the office, not many of us have time to sit down for hours and hours, fiddling with the computer to get it to do what we want, some of us have a 'Life'!

I do use Ubuntu, its my main OS, I like it, (I know that doesn't come across), but its never going to convince the M$ or Mac crowd over, due to its severe lack of functionality, dated user interface and poor user experience, there is a Lot of work still to do.

Exactly what I was thinking, M$ being Lazy as usual, typical. I mean why reuse the hardware we have, when we can chuck it out and buy new, as we all have cash to splash don't 'we?? ! Oh dear.
