And if you still cling to the view that "all Germans in the War were Nazis and evil", I highly recommend the book "A Higher Call" by Adam Makos (here's a preview link on Amazon, if their evil link-share thing works as I hope it does)

It's a fascinating (true) tale of how a Luftwaffe pilot escorted a badly damaged B-17 bomber out of German airspace to safety, and goes into some detail about the mutual respect between the Luftwaffe and their opponents. It will open your eyes to a very different perspective.

This is so true. Some scammy background process keeps popping up to tell me "<XXX> just got installed! Check it out!".

Re: She was a good ship

Not quite. ME was a stopgap for consumers, a halfway house between the old DOS+shell world of 9x and the modern, shiny, but oh-so-resource-heavy by comparison, world of NT (64MB RAM needed! the horror!)

In practical terms, what that meant was that they ripped out access to the underlying DOS (it was still there but you couldn’t exit out of Windows to it), put in some DirectX stuff... and ended up with an OS that combined all the games compatibility of NT with the renowned stability of 95.

All this is IIRC of course and it’s possible that the years have made me more cynical about it.

Re: How about

The “Drones” was the name of the fictional gentlemens’ club in PG Wodehouse’s Jeeves & Wooster books. It was a club of what we might otherwise refer to as upper-class twits.

Bear that in mind, and from now on any news stories you read about ”drones being used to deliver groceries” or ”drones sighted on airport runway” etc. will be just that little bit more surreal and interesting with the appropriate mental substitution.
