What happens when cancel culture meets Adolf Hitler pareidolia? Amazon decides it needs a new app icon

David 132 Silver badge

Re: I'd like to admit....

Actually if you look at the full logo, as seen for example in the top-left corner of their main page... the arrow goes from A to Z.

Which I thought was clever when I spotted it, but then I’m a sucker for hidden elements in logos, like the Toblerone bear or the FedEx arrow.

This offensive app icon perfectly captures Hitler's whimsical, playful smile and brown skin, even if the hair tone is a little les blue than it was in reality. It's uncanny. How on earth did Amazon think that they could slip this one past us. They honestly couldn't have done a more convincing representation of him in any way. Allow me to recommend an oldie but goodie... The Zompist Phrasebook. Take a few minutes to read it; it helps if you speak at least some French/German/Spanish, because as you go down the page, the translations start to diverge further from the original English (and indeed, from each other, and from good taste, reality, diplomacy...). It's laugh-out-loud hilarious.

My personal favourite is this helpful translation, from the "Cultural Exchanges" section of the page:

English: "Impressed as I am with the New Wave in cinematography, I must say that this particular film seemed both pretentious and unsatisfying, and that the director's imagery, though compelling, is no substitute for a true cinematic message."

French: "Mais c'est de la merde, ce navet."

Wonder which part of Portland he's in...

Fair play to him.

I'm South-West of Portland, and lost power for almost 3 days. I was really, really lucky that it wasn't longer, because I'm in a rural location. Managed to get by with an open log fire and my generator. Unfortunately it's only a 4KW one - you know that scene in Apollo 13 where they have to power up everything in exactly the right order, to stay within power budget? Yeah, that hit close to home for me. "So, I can have the microwave and the LED shoplight, or the light and the dish heater, or the fridge and the kettle and USB charger... but no more..."

Just over the county line, there were many folks who were without power for 2 weeks or more. It was the ice-storm that did it; trees were coated with thick ice, bringing branches and limbs down everywhere. Kinda scary to go to sleep, listening to the CRACK and THUD of falling branches all around my house. I'm sure that the kernel release was not Linus' top priority for the duration.

Honestly, what surprised me the most about this article is the revelation that there are still products on Amazon that aren't cheap Chinese tat with multiple listings under different unpronouncable names that all look like someone mashed a Latin alphabet keyboard, and phony reviews.

Amazon has been actively courting Chinese sellers for a few years now, even offering them a direct-to-the-West logistics service, and it shows. Shopping on Amazon is now just as much of a crapshoot as Alibaba.

Agreed (and upvoted). It'd be nice to have a way to retract a vote. For those occasions when you see a comment that makes you think "I agree with your first few points, but why did you then have to ruin it by throwing in a gratuitous political remark at the end" - too good to downvote, too tricksy to upvote...

Another (exceedingly minor) niggle I have with the voting system is that - here on a desktop browser, at least - if the up/down arrows are just above the bottom of the browser window, in the location where the red "Thanks. Your vote will be recorded" banner appears, then you can't click the arrows at all. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me?

It's almost like that red banner is present-but-invisible-until-you-vote, blocking access to any arrows that would be under it. It's such a drag to have to scroll the page down by half an inch or so in order to vote, the admins have failed, I am disgusted and will be cancelling my subscription forthwith, general fall in standards, etc etc...

Re: Caller Line Identification

Here in the US, I’ve had my current mobile number for almost 10 years now, and am still plagued with calls for the previous holder of the number. Used to be predominantly legit calls, from which I have deduced that Fred <last name redacted>: owed a lot of money to collection agencies, was elderly, diabetic, and subscribed to porn sites.

These days, now that I’ve called the legit pharmacies/insurers/bailiffs and explained the situation, it’s mostly pure scam calls and texts... “FRED we have a fedex package for you click here ://dherht.cx/fuehtc (ie totally shady looking URL)” or “FRED I am so horny for you now click here to see my cam” (and far worse than that... if I had a small kid who saw some of these texts pop up on my phone I’d be even more homicidal). Basically, the dozy old twazzock still seems to be giving out my number to all and sundry.

Oh, more recently I’ve had several texts addressed to “Ramon”, so I can only assume there’s a similarly-senile Mexican version of Fred out there too.

AT&T, of course, couldn’t care less and will not do anything about it. Horrible company.
