Re: 2.75TB

Funnily enough, I was only thinking earlier today of the time back in my final year of university (‘95 or so), when a friend got a shiny brand new 1GB hard drive! My, how we all ooh’ed and aaaah’ed at his extravagance. Funny to think that these days that would be a puny amount of memory, let alone primary storage..

It was a Tom’s Hardware Guide video. I still have a copy saved somewhere. Upon removal of the heatsink, the Pentium MMX soon locked up (but was fine after heatsink replacement and reboot); the Pentium 4 slowed down but kept running; and the Athlon locked up and released the smoke.

Re: "You need a Pi-Hole on your network."

I run Pi-Hole on my network, and tbh the only problem I've found with it - and it's a big one - is that the online "what's currently on tap" page of my local pub's website doesn't work when Pi-Hole is active, and I have to drop off my wifi onto cellular to see if it's worth my wandering down to pick up a growler(*) of anything.

Ah, but remember, they're not stuffing adverts onto your TV. That would be sleazy and disreputable. No, no, no. They're "leveraging their rich ecosystem of consumer-focused technology to bring you an unrivaled and carefully-curated selection of exciting offers from valued partners and major brands, at no extra cost to you, their valued customer, to keep your experience with their products fresh and dynamic".

I could go on in that vein, but honestly, I've thrown up twice over my keyboard already.

Re: "UK restaurants had run out of milkshakes"

I suspect that in the specific case you mention, the issue is more that no McDonalds, anywhere in the world, has anything that Luxembourg (and Belgium, and France) would deign to recognise as "chocolate". Didn't the chocolatiers of Belgium lobby a few years ago to get Cadbury's finest re-designated as "cocoa-based vegetable solids" or something equally accurate-and-unappetising? (as to what they think of Hershey's and other mass-market American "chocolate" facsimiles, I'm sure it's something rude in Phlegmish, and no that's not a typo)

GitHub's npm gave away a package name while it was in use, causing rethink

David 132 Silver badge

In this case I think the correct decision was made.

I can't speak for the general situation, but in this specific case I have to say I think the owner of the original Bebop package (Kelling) was at fault, for not ensuring that the correct email address was on file for his package. I don't think it's asking too much, if you're publishing a package to a public resource, for the onus to be on you to keep the correct email address.

Yes, I feel bad for him that he lost control of the package name, but some of the blame does lie with him. In the circumstances I think Github and the new Bebop owner handled it well.
