Sony wins subpoena for PS3 hacker's PayPal records

Thumb Up

I'm with Sony on this one

I doubt that Sony would be chasing him so hard if he hacked just his one PS3. The problem was he told the world how to do it, effectively inviting piracy on to the system. If you want a system you can do what you want with, buy a PC ffs.

Silent?

When the fans kick it it's anything but silent. I've seen the fans at full speed with only one core under load too. I've got the 2.3ghz i7 but I only expected the noise when I was using all the cores.

Why?

If I am capable of changing something to make my life easier then I will. OSS is capable of being changed directly by me.

Gaming sales wilt after Australian retail orgy

Could also be...

The parity with the U.S. dollar means imports are much cheaper than buying locally. I know I've bought a lot from hmv uk since it's usally half price, even after shipping and the PS3 isn't region locked.

Putting the internet into neutral, or neutering the net?

Smart pipes

Actually I'm dead against net neutrality. I'd like a VOIP service that is prioritized over p2p so I can call people without a landline. I would have thought, however, that ISP's would hate to have smart pipes. That ruins their defence against copyright infringers so that they themselves are liable for content. I guess they've got more money for lawyers than me though and have figured a way around that part.

That's the last company I worked for screwed then. Java devs on mac pros. Only a few hundred grand apple won't be getting every few years then...

Oracle sues Google over Java in Android

FAIL

Re: Semantics

If you've used java you should know that a class is also an object. When classloaders load jars they load all the classes into memory. Anyone who has ever run tomcat with dynamic reloading has probably noticed how much memory this usually causes applications to leak.

Aussie parties trade blows over fast broadband

Unhappy

NBN

I'd much prefer the government option - dig up the roads just once and rent out the infrastructure like every other utility. I was amazed when looking at connections the other day and ADSL2 isn't even standard yet.

As for money going into Australian pockets, probably not. The job listings mention one 'Oracle ERP suite'. No doubt to implement it they'll hire some multinational who will outsource the work.

Want to use WD diagnostics? Buy Windows

Pat 3
FAIL

Yep.

No support at all for WD green drives under linux. They have an especially nasty issue where they park if idle for 10 seconds and this can't be reconfigured. Caching under linux means you hit this very often whereas windows talks to the drive more frequently and keeps it active. After some very light use my drive at home as 50,000 Load Cycle Count. Apparently this is a green 'feature.

Good news

All ADSL providers give you a better quote when you sign up based on the length of your line. 'Up to 24mb' is the theoretical maximum of the technology. Unfortunately BT controls the copper so all ADSL providers are the same unless they artifically cap your speed. Sky's 'up to 20mb' just means they'll give you all they can. You've got two choices - BT's network or Virgins. Suck it up.

Big MP

Unfortunately it's consumers and retail in the UK driving for more MP as it's a simple quantative number that people use as a more == better comparison. Other markets do not care so much about it. The vendors are just repsonding to market demand.

Until consumers get educated and demand better image quality then it will stay this way. Image quality is hard to compare though.

Erm...

So your PC wouldn't automatically go to sleep while files were shared even if you stopped sharing them. But you can still manually tell it to do so. And it does stop sharing the files. So, yep, not really that interesting.

Ruby on Rails?

Wasn't ruby's rise to power partly due to ruby on rails? I.e. the boilerplate code generating IDE for ruby?

Most ruby devs resist IDE's because IDE's can't offer all that much support for weakly typed scripting languages such as ruby. So the choice is between a memory hogging IDE or a simple text editor with syntax highlighting.
