Re: Adverts and Malware

There's two main reasons why I have not owned a TV for many years.

1) Shampoo adverts. Make up some pseudo scientific chemical names and talk B.S. while vacuous models shake their heads.

2) Car adverts. You never see a traffic jam, this car can go really fast and (wipe out your family) it's really really good.

'Software delivered to Boeing' now blamed for 737 Max warning fiasco

Mystic Megabyte
Stop

Evidence in a trial?

If I owned a 737MAX I think it would be prudent to lock the cockpit and not let any Boeing engineers inside. The original software needs to be extracted and analysed before being overwritten by version 2. I don't know if this is possible but it is evidence and people have died.

Bulk mail

I occasionally work in various UK locations. This usually involves two flights each way and a hire car on arrival. This is all arranged for me and sent by email. When printed out it's about 12 pages of colour images and waffle. All I want are the flight times, boarding passes and the name of the car hire firm. I think that could be done on three pages. It is a real pain when I'm at a check-in desk and having to find the correct info. I might have to revert to copy scissors and pasting with *real* paste!

Even more baffling is the "Do you need need to print this?" saving paper messages and then having colour logos etc. plastered everywhere.

Toilet humour?

My father told me a funny story. On shore leave from the navy he and his mates were befriended by a stray dog. All was well until the dog fell through the crust on top of a disused cesspit. Now they were desperately trying to shoo this shitty dog away. I think long sticks may have been involved. Poor dog!

More amusingly a friend of mine from an Asian country told me that aged 13 she had her own gang at school. So six girls were in six hole-in-the-ground toilets having sneaky cigarettes when a teacher arrived. The girls simultaneously threw their cigarettes down the holes creating an explosion which covered them in shit.

Their punishment was to be tied in a line with string and stand in the sun while the entire school was paraded past them. If they tried to pick off the rapidly drying shit they were whacked with a stick! Then marched off to be scrubbed down in the showers.

Amazon

I recently bought three quite expensive items on Amazon. So after spending hours identifying the items that suited my needs I got to the checkout. Re: A (mostly) serious question @Mage

Thanks! That's some seriously nerdy link, I'd never heard of Torchships. Nowadays I tend to believe that we're in a simulation so interstellar travel would not work. If the Voyager probe disappears shortly it may be a clue that the simulation has a boundary. In the meantime I still enjoy sci-fi, it's nice to expand your thoughts to galactic levels.

Mystic Megabyte

A (mostly) serious question

I've wondered about this for a while so I'll ask the commentard collective.

Any satellite or probe will have a hot side and a cold side. Say you had a sterling engine aboard that used this temperature differential to generate electricity. Then use that to power a laser beam pointed out into space. My thinking is that as you are now pumping energy away from the probe it should cool it.

Is that in any way correct? Would any sharks be harmed in this experiment?

Hysteric Scotland

I was told that Historic Scotland ordered a replica desk/table for a 19th. century ex-military *building. These things are made by craftsmen to be as original as possible. I can't remember the exact details but they had got their units wrong, measured in inches but made in millimetres. At great expense the tiny table was delivered!

*These were built to keep the Yankees out!

Fun fact. When the original (very heavy) cannons became obsolete the navy used them as moorings. One was fished out of a river somewhere, refurbished and reinstalled on the Martello tower. A big event was going to be the firing of the cannon with people in period costume etc. After a countdown the cannon was fired but unknown to us the people of the adjacent island of Flotta had got hold of some maroons and "retaliated"! Much booms and laughter ensued.

Worth a visit, these towers are actually quite sophisticated structures.
