Wi-Fi security befuddles clueless home users

2 out of 5.. that high?

I'm surprised it's as many as 2 out of 5. At least most ISPs are now spoon feeding people by coming with all their security settings pre-installed and set up. All people need to do is enter a key in and away they go.

The problem in doing this is that the customer doesn't learn anything, they don't know why they have to connect with a secure key and they wouldn't know how to replace their own router should it fail.

I'd rather have ignorant customers with a secure wi-fi connection than someone who thinks they know what they are doing but have it set up incorrectly.

Win 7 up, Mac OS X down in market share wars

Macs are just too expensive to justify cos

I have been looking for the best bang for buck vs lightweight laptops this week and really fancied a Mackbook pro or Macbook Air especially because I heard about bootcamp (in case I didn't like Mac OS). However I just couldn't justify the cost and got a nice 13" W7 64 bit i3 (yes Ultra Mobile I know isn't 'as powerful') with 4GB DDR3 memory and 500GB HD for half the price. It weighs only 300g more than macbook air.

I think Apple want their customers to be elitist though. If too many people had Macs they wouldn't be 'Special'. So if Apple ever want to truly take on PCs and Windows they must simply drop their price - end of.

Westminster politicos told to grasp Vista nettle

Oh Dear

I agree with above, the big issue with all this is the hardware. Vista is the biggest memory hugging OS ever created so trying to use this is suicide.

The only upgrade patch is to go straight to Windows 7, buy an extra 1GB of memory minimum for each PC and keep their fingers crossed. It's not just the government, it's the NHS too they are all running on Windows 2000.

This is a massive timebomb waiting to happen, they need to start purchasing new hardware now with W7 and upgrade as many suitable PCs as they can whilst they are doing this.

There's no quick fix. I like Linux, Ubuntu is the most user friendly. However it's hard enough getting these people to open their e-mail in Windows. They just couldn't handle training on a completely different OS. At least with W7 you can turn off the fancy GUI and go back to old mode with looks exactly like Windows 2000 they wouldn't notice :)

There is one final option..... Get into bed with Google and be the first to run their OS. Just have 3 icons on screen.... 'Web', 'Mail', 'Docs'. Maybe they could handle that and shouldn't take up too many resources either.
