Computer Science vs. IT Employment

I think the difference between a computer science degree and technical training needs to be recognised. When I did my degree I learned the science of computers- we didn't learn how to install and use Linux or Windows, but we did learn the fundamentals of operating systems. We were taught programming but not as a means to get a job, but as a way of explaining computational efficiency. We were told how routers work, but not how to work a router. Etc.

If I'd have learned the OS of the day, or the programming language of the week, then my degree would be meaningless now. As it stands, my degree is a foundation that I built a career on.

If kids want to get into IT and don't want to put in the years, getting Microsoft/ Cisco/ whoever certified will be quicker and cheaper than getting a degree.

It's annoying. I have no problems paying a little extra to get my veggies from a local provider. I'll pay a resonable price in a bricks and mortar shop to buy DVDs/ books rather than use online. I wouldn't mind higher taxes to keep jobs onshore. Of course I'd prefer that they use the money they have wisely, but that'd never happen...

Looking at the reviews for Mario (and indeed Zelda) games they're almost always highly praised and in 'game of the year' short lists. Thinking about it, didn't the 3DS sales take a huge bump when Mario 3d & Mario Kart were released? (Although lets not discount the price cut).

There's a valid argument that Nintendo shoe-horn Mario et al into too many games (Mario & Sonic at the olympics? Really?), and imo they could also do with creating more varied games. But lets be honest here, they have a massive user base for their hardware, and their software is critically and comercially successful- I think they're doing something right.

He broke the law. He admits he broke the law. There is an agreement (no matter what you think about it) that the Americans can extradite him for trial in the US. What's there to decide?

I don't understand the medical side of the argument either. As far as I (and wikipedia) know, Asperger syndrome affects social interaction, not the ability to know the difference between right and wrong.

This is worrying...

I'm a little worried why so much attention is being placed on this. Surely the point of the web is to be platform independent, and any web developer worth their salt designs to web standards and not individual browsers.

The security question is also worrying. It assumes that all of the government users have direct access to the internet as a whole. I would *hope* there would be content filters etc that will block access to potentially damaging sites. And since MS are supporting the browser until 2014 I assume they will still release security patches for it. Again, I would *hope* there's a decent patch policy in place to roll these out to users...
