Samsung's Galaxy S7 line has had a good run with four years of security updates – but you'll want to trade yours in now

T-Unit

Re: Welcome to the modern world

Isn't it more stupid to spend money on maintaining an old device with a dwindling user base?

As a Samsung customer I understand that you can't support a device forever. A new phone every 4 years seems perfectly reasonable.

Re: Works for Waze too

Waze asks other users for confirmation and takes the numbers into account when re-routing. You'd either need to do this same thing with many phones or report an incident (crash, roadworks etc) to affect it. In the former case, one or two cars passing through unimpeded would undo your work, and in the latter case a few users hitting "not there" would undo it.

On top of that, if you are frequently reporting things that other users mark as incorrect, a behind-the-scenes credibility score drops and the weighting of your input is reduced.

Re: Ingenious

Fun fact: There is no mention of them being red in the original German version. That was inserted into the English one to make the syllable count scan better.

Also Nena (the original band) don't really like the English translation claiming it "We made a mistake there. I think the song loses something in translation and even sounds silly."

Re: One of life's losers...

That's a very good point. I have some sympathy for Pleskov, I've been in environments where 'winning' was fetishised to the point that cheating, lying, and sabotaging others was practically encouraged.

That said, this was no such an environment so that feeling was down to him alone. It does sound like he's learned that lesson though, the hard way.

Re: Eh?

Free speech is an incredibly low bar to set yourself. If 'not breaking the law' is the only barrier between your brain and your mouth then you are an unkind, mean-spirited, thoughtless, a-hole.

The law isn't a set of rules for how we should behave, it's a last resort when someone is bahving SO badly they need to be physically stopped!

There are posters at my kid's school that say "Before you speak, THINK" and that acronym means you shouldn't say something unless it's "True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, and Kind". I really wish more adults would consider this before they open their mouths.

Just because you CAN say something, and even if it's true ("you're really fat") doesn't mean you should.

That's extra stupid because the game doesn't even work like that. The pokemon appear for all players, they don't go away when one person catches them.

Re: I've got a lot of fond memories of playing Pokemon Leafgreen with my son.

This is exactly the ignorance that is being proliferated by the media. You can catch a pokemon if it is within about 15 feet of you. You never need to go into the middle of a road, or a railway line, or someone's private property to catch them. There is nothing wrong with the game mechanics.

Also, the game literally warns you to "Remember to be alert at all times. Stay aware of your surroundings" every time you load it up. People who are putting themselves in danger are idiots blaming something else for their own stupidity.

Android Mew-ware, I choose you: Code nasty poses as Pokemon GO

T-Unit

And it's making matters worse. If the unofficial APK was no good because there was no data outside the officially released regions, people wouldn't be using it. That would alleviate these worries of malware and reduce the strain on their servers.

Don't get me wrong, I play it here in the UK so I'm glad it works but nearly every pokestop and gym I've been to (these are the location points based on landmarks and public buildings) there have been several other players, even in my quiet little village. There must be tens of thousands of people playing it here in the UK alone. Given that it requires constant connection to the servers and uses GPS locations it would be trivial to disable it in unreleased regions.

It's almost as if they don't want to do that.

Nexus S appears twice

You have the device listed twice as both a Google Nexus S and a Samsung Nexus S . Given the identical specs I assume that is the mistake.

Why is Google's new Nexus S like no other smartphone?

You don't have all the answers and sound like a petulant, ignorant fool. The simple fact is that I do not want to carry around a dedicated camera for the odd opportunist photo of friends being silly, nor a music player for the stroll to work, a sat nav for visiting client sites, a games console for the odd moment I'm waiting for my girlfriend to try something on in a shop plus the plethora of other funky things I do with my Android phone every day.

Of course convergent devices aren't as good as stand alone, but it's about convenience and compromising some quality for that. Considering that, the quality I get is more than adequate anyway

XDA Devs is not a hacking collective!

I doubt I'll be the last XDA member to come on here and say this but it is NOT a hacking collective or anything of the sort. It is, as the name suggests, a group of developers but also enthusiasts, fans and pasing visitors who are looking to get the best out of their smartphone. Some of the work revolves around custom firmware but a lot more of it is about new apps, themes, ways of doing things and discussion about new devices or how-to guides.
