So if these files were open sourced then Google can use them and the only thing they have done wrong is re-licence them under apache?
Maybe I'm reading the article wrong but this doesn't seem to have any major implications for android.

Working from the phone industry we never had these types of shortages for the iPhone, one reason I have heard for this is that Apple have had an amazingly high failure rate at the factory for their so called "retina" displays. This seems to be a solution for that problem but I would have thought just re-designing the phone to fix the couple of major problems with the currant design would be cheaper. If the Sharp factory isn't going live till 2012 that means that iPhone fans wont be able to get their hands on super AMOLED or better technology till at least the end 2012 if not later. Seems an odd move to me...
Hmm looked really hard at my Desire and can't see them till 2-3 cm away. Same with HD2. But let's face it, thank god apple upgraded that travesty of a display I was starting to feel quite sorry for iPhone users at least now they are up to date with the hardware even if the OS is still sorely lacking.
quote:"I can't remember who "invented" WiFi but I know I started using Apple's Airport in what was it, 1999? I was working in a high tech IT consultancy at the time and most of the other people I was working with just had blank expressions on their face when I tried to explain the concept of browsing wirelessly to them. It was at least 2 or 3 years later before Intel's Centrino ads hit TV that most people even heard of the concept. Ditto with things like USB and, to a lesser extent, FireWire."
Australia thats who!
In 1992, the CSIRO obtained a patent in Australia for their wireless data transfer technology. In 1996, they obtained a patent for the same technology in the US.[6] WiFi uses the mathematical formula in the patents. In 2000, CSIRO demonstrated the world's first wireless local area network internet connection
So maybe not in 1999? or maybe apple invented it?
quote "Is the author an Apple-hating troll? I think we should be told....
FYI - plugged in my 3GS, "iOS4 available. Do you want to update?" Yes. Fifteen minutes later (after only one click) I'm back up with a fully functioning iPhone. But you really don't want to hear stories like that, do you?:"
Seriously go to the apple forums looks like you were a lucky one, why is it every time apple update anything they mess it up?
Hopefully this fixes the intermittent issues with wireless modems from ZTE, MAXON, Sierra Wireless etc... tired of telling Mac users to go to their local shop. Why can't they just buy a normal computer and stop winging about every piece of hardware under the sun not having Mac support
Get over it, if you want another browser just install it internet explorer is part of the operating system you buy and a useful backup if something goes wrong with you daily use browser. I think it is ridiculous they have to advertise a competitors product on their operating system in the first place. Explorer is constantly losing market share, when they eventually in the minority should other browser makers be made to advertise explorer to give it a leg up to? If opera care so much why don't they develope an opera OS and actually put some money into it instead of leaching off others. Posted from Chrome browser having never opened explorer for internet purposes.
@Anonymous Coward Did you stop reading at that bit? If you had carried on, you'd know that apps like skype (is that officially available for Android yet), spotify and other such apps will continue to function as expected. Nice try. Big FAIL though. HUGE
What about an app like settings profile lite, it runs in the background checking every 10 min on your position and will adjust the profiles (ring volume, wifi and many more) depending on location. If third party developers can actually have their apps run in the background that is multi-tasking if they just stop when your not looking at them then its just a pretty looking shortcut menu. happy to be corrected but it doesn't seem like the iphone has multi-tasking in the way every other device/computer does.
Haha heard it has multi-tasking after a bit of research "the way its meant to be done" on apples website means that each application will stop working as you exit it for the next but then you can go back and continue from where you left off on the old. Kinda a guys way of multi-tasking but doesn't look like apple users are getting any of the cool programs that have to run in the background like what android has anytime soon.
Loving this, my previous smart phones have been touch pro, touch pro 2, N97, touch HD2 and now desire and with each upgrade I have seen how the rise in performance of the chips that power them just makes so much more possible now then 2 years ago. If intel are really hitting the right power consumption then they could provide some real competition to qualcomm and nvidia and we all know that more competition means better products.
I run AVG Free and Spy Bot Search and Destroy Free that update every week and run a scan every week. I haven't picked up a virus in 5 years and the only time I do get warnings is if I download some dodgy key gen or game crack and then the programs wont allow me to install it without going past a "THIS IS A VIRUS" screen. Now this is with both XP and Windows 7 so my question is how many people here have been compromised by a real virus and not just a trojan in the last 5 years? Seems to me like virus threats are just something apple uses to scare people into buying their expensive rubbish.
I think this is bulllsh**t, i by no means use internet explorer but Microsoft have earned there way into almost everyones computer. Why the hell should they be required to support and advertise other peoples software! If the European Union felt so strongly about this then why do Apple get to use safari as theire default browser. it clearly demonstrates the anti-trust union thirst for money. It's disgusting they get away with this they should be taken to court and sued my Microsoft for this travesty. im sure that they are above the law for their actions.
I don't think google has much to worry about they are far better company in terms of the quality of the product they produce and the price point, or lack of in many cases. the companys ethics are also much better apple will.continue to be a locked down company and are destined to lose in the mobile market.
>>>"Speaking as someone who has just completed a weeks worth of UAT testing of an very advanced web-based document management system on a low powered mini-desktop running XP and IE7, I can safely say that saving CPU cycles by disabling Flash is NOT laughable. Even in Windows."
I was replying to another comment about saving CPU cycles on an Intel 2.8GHz quad core with 4GB RAM. In relation to the very underpowered machines you were using that would make more sense.
"So by his logic Windows has achieved its widespread monopoly because it has no widespread problems? 500,000 viruses is, therefore, not a problem"
Just because people break into your car doesn't mean your car has problems it just means there is something to gain in doing so, Microsoft do an excellent job at releasing software for thousands of different hardware designs with awesome legacy support. Despite people and their tall poppy syndrome issues.
Flash has brought an incredible amount to the web. By the sounds of things mac support could use a lot of work but considering that impacts relatively nobody, really who cares?
"two blank FLASH boxes on the previous Register page, and 3 on the page these message is being typed thanks to Click2Flash plug-in. I'm not missing anything but CPU cycle stealing eye candy worthless advertisements. Never mind I'm using a 2.8GHz 4GB quad core Mac Pro with 22" wide LCD"
Without flash we would not have nearly as many sites using embeded video which i consider to be some of the best part of the web. I have never had any crashes relating to flash in any of the browsers or if there was then i didn't notice. If you are having issues running a little program like flash on your setup then i think its time to switch to windows because that really poor i know support for anything not apple is rubbish but seriously saving cpu cycles by not running flash is laughable. Finaly 22" LCD has nothing to do with the speed of flash on your computer, you weak video card might do though...
You clearly havn't used windows 7 on a touch screen it is so much better then i expected im going to but a $600 acer 20" touch screen. Seriously if you think about it the ipad is a pointless gimmick for the vast majority of potential customers. now a tablet running a proper OS thats far more use full.
"I received some of the best customer service I've ever encountered when contacting Apple for a replacement. They admitted fault immediately" pity they can't fess up like that to the media when they mess something up i'm sure i'm not the only one here getting tired of apples "head in the sand" approach to problems
Quote "FYI. I did have a PC. It lasted about 20 minutes before I needed to reinstall the OS because it had slowed down so much. After 4 years of this, I threw it out a window"
Every 20 minutes for 4 years? Didn't occur to you might be a hardware fault? typical mac user.
I ran OSX 10.5.5 on my PC (AMD) for quite some time and found it to be like every other unix/linux distro out there. Sure it boots fast and looks pretty but not worth paying money for since if your a power user you need to be running windows anyway, and defiantly not worth the ripoff money money you pay apple for the privilege of owning cheap albeit good looking? hardware.
Apple have never been very good in the hardware department this is nothing new, just because they price it so high doesn't mean they spent more on the parts that go in. Just a worse situation then normal go buy a PC heaps cheaper, faster and get windows 7 no more messing around trying to get programs and hardware to be campatible.
