Converged IT stacks threaten storage interfaces

Wanda Lust

I might be vertical but what's the BMI?

HP (& its server selling competitors) are addressing a problem. In a virtualised environment the world needs less servers. So the answer is: make all those servers into something else, like... storage.

Take Left Hand as an example: you want storage that comprises, say, 72 physical drives. You get something in the order of 12 CPUs and 24GB of memory along with your drives all stuffed into 6 storage units (good job I didn't say servers). A typical mid-range, dual controller storage array does that with a couple of CPUs & maybe 8GB memory, tops.

Looks like EVA technology is also due for server fattening if El Reg's recent notes are accurate.

HP's might be a vertically integrated model but it sure gets lardy around the bottom.

HP at storage crossroads

Industry standard

Industry standard, an oxymoron.

The opportunity in low end storage is to wrap HP servers with storage branding, i.e. sell more servers.

Mozilla unfurls first mobile Firefox

Jobs Halo

In the pan...

'Mozilla removed support for an Adobe plug-in, saying it had "degraded the performance of the browser to the point where it didn't meet our standards."'

So, if you're frugal with platform's CPU you don't want something hogging the cycles.

Why doesn't Steve just tell us that's why the iP....s won't do it either?? Heck even my Atom N270 powered netbook stutters at flash.

Well, it's obvious really: omnipotents don't see the need to explain.

Apple's iPad - fat iPhone without the phone

to all earthlings

Spot on, not a computer, it's a consumer device made by a company that dropped "Computers" from its title some while ago.

Consumer device is about the best I can do without generating a long list, so iPad is good enough.

Get on the train - it's coverage for the "store". If you're comfortable with full fat "computers" you are channelled in from iMacs & Macbooks (plus Windows), if "mobile" is your thing you are channelled in from iPod Touch & iPhone and the "netbook" form factor guys now have their thing.

The device is the hook, the tel/cellco is the line (and only the line), the store is the sinker. Steve's got ya!

Microsoft predicts Linux will fail mobile 'quality' test

FAIL

Oh yeah, Microsoft's predictions

Like.. why would a PC need more than 640KBytes of memory, like.... the internet's a fad...

They're good at predictions, NOT

You've gotta lead to be successful at predictions these days. Fail, fail, fail!
