All it needs is at the next meeting to agree a new safe harbur is for the USA to agree to abide to the standards set by the EU on data security be it personal or non-personal.

If they do that then there is no problem. If not then the EU should simply make a statement that the US is not willing to protect EU citizens and business so they don't get special treatment and have to operate in the same way as the rest of the world and make agreements and sign binding contracts etc just like the Chinese, North Koreans and Australians etc....

I can see only one solution to this

No data sent to the USA and US companies needing to open European only businesses that comply with EU laws.

You don't do that then you get no business from the EU, that will hit them where it really hurts, in the balance sheet and you can bet all those shareholders will be screaming very quickly, then the US government will find itself under massive pressure as the US recovery turns into a possible US depression....

And lets be honest the quote from Big Tech: that "We expect that a suspension of Safe Harbor will negatively impact Europe’s economy, hurt small and medium-sized enterprises, and the consumers who use their services, the most". is a load of bullshit, it will hit the biggest US tech companies in a massive way, this could easily lead to EU citizen data only being allowed in centers on EU soil and run by EU business's with no USA input other than ownership and any profits being allowed to ead home, after tax that is.

It is simply the fault of US companies boardrooms for not doing their jobs and getting contingencies into place ready for this. If I were the CEO etc I would be asking several underlings what they have done to be ready and if nothing showing them the door.

Whats taking so long ?

The Commision should put a short and simple statement to the USA saying that EU citizens data is off limits to the USA without a valid court decision on individual basis unless it can be prooved they are a security risk when a short term licence to spy can be granted and the data checked to ensure its right.

Any data that goes to the USA must be off limits to anyone other than the company and for specific purpose, ie certain data kept for account charges.

If they refuse to follow the EU line then they should be forced to do the same as every other countries companies and negociate an agreement on a company by company basis. After all why should we give special treatment to a country that ignores our laws just because they want to.

Google dont sale many phones and certainly not a billion of them, manufacturers such as Samsung sale them.

Google have already according to the story provided those patches etc to them as if you don't get it ask your phone maker why not , not Google.

As to root access etc, Google phones ie Nexus phones have root access very easily so you can do what you want with it.

As to 2 year old phone updates, again ask Samsung etc not Google.......

Good, I only pay for the licence and get my content from streaming services, just get a good VPN or unblock US and you can stream content from US TV companies just as easily as you can the BBC etc.

Add to that Netflix or whatever and you get a hell of a lot of stuff for way less than Sky charge for the cheapest service.

Cut costs even more, get a £10 A month SIM from BT Mobile (link below) and use it for access to BT Wifi and dump your landline & broadband to save mega bucks.

My monthly cost is £10 for the SIM and £4.99 for Netflix and £2.99 for Eurosport, I use an old PC for the streaming and Hola in Chrome (Only use PC for this) and I have more content than hours to watch it plus a backup phone in the glovebox of my car just in case I need one.

Boy what a load of rubbish.

Firstly unless there is some way to start compition then you will only ever have one or two Big Ones, its the cahnges that wre made to how premier league football was bid for that led to others apart from Sky having some and we having some compitition on it. The same is true for everything else, don't forget for years Sky had the streming rights on most movies in this country and never used them which is why we have so little on Netflix or Amazon compared to the USA.

Secondly Sky are not the only broadcast service. TalkTalk and BT carry it over DSL and Virgin over their network. This is the same exactly as Sky just with wires / fibre. Add to that Netflix etc who you quote are purely stream on demand and not live broadcast then they are not part of the same system

What is needed is for Sky to be broken up the same as BT, Openreach was split off and must treat everyon equally, Sky subscription channels should be the same, a seperate company selling to Sky TV, BT etc on an equal footing. Then we would have real compitition with any company able to offer everything to customers and compete to get out business.

Almost every one of the iPhone or other owners who might pay by NFC will already have a debit or credit card that does the pay by touch routine.

Its my main method on small payments. What therefore is the point of having this on a phone ? Whenever I am in London and using transport just letting my card go through the gate system or touching it against a big button on a bus just works without the risk to my phone by tapping it against some object.

Waste of time all round, just get a prepay card and use that if you are worried about it getting nicked.

I feel sorry for you poor people in the USA.

I have just taken a retentions deal with Three UK and for about $47 a month (£30) I have a brand new Galaxy Note 4 and unlimited minutes, texts and data (real unlimited, I use at least 100 plus gigs a month streaming and downloading torrents) on a 24 month contract.

To me thats the highest price I would pay for the deal. I look on in horror at what you have to pay.

I have uploaded 120 gigs of music going back to my youth in the 60's and having that plus everything on Google available is a dream come true.

Since subscribing I have not bought a single album so saved money each month. I have also discovered a load of artists I would never have done and developed an interest in Folk Music that I never listened to before.

Worth every penny that I spend on it.

iOS costs ? well since it already exists its mostly adding new bits and changing the UI look feel and method.

So if we imagine there are say 1000 people programming iOS changes and they earn say $200,000, thats $200,000,000 a year, last year they sold about 170 million iphones and 65 million ipads. so thats less than $1 a year per unit. allow $5 billion for costs per year and wow thats just over $20 per unit.....

Sorry your figures don't add up, especially when you look at Apples profits last year.

Couple of things.....

O2 has already agreed to be bought by three so tie up with Sky not likely.

Secondly why would Vodafone and Sky be a BT/EE killer ? BT are already knocking Sky back with its "free" BT sport offer. I have a SIM from BT that for £10 a month gives me free BT sport and free unlimited Wifi. Add to that online streaming and I don't even need freeview or freesat. Top that off with iplayer etc and I have tons of stuff to watch. a few quid for say unblock us and I have all the US channels to watch that sky stuff as well.

As the phone connects to free wifi hotspots I assume the data usage is only when connected to and using the cell operators network.

If not then are they saying they will charge you for free data usage on free wifi ?

In Comparison BT Mobile offer non broadband customers a SIM only 12 month contract for £25, thats for unlimited calls and texts plus 20 GB of data, plus unlimited connection to BT Wifi with over 5 million hotspots and BT Sports. I have it and don't need home broadband or phone any more. Shows how bad a deal you get in the USA.

Nah this is a non starter

There are several NPE's some even owned by roups of companies such as Apple who buy up loads of patents form all over the place and package them on FRAND terms or similar so you can get most of the patents licences you need to cover your product for a small fee in one place. These very useful companies need to be protected for all our benifit.

What is needed is to limit what NPE's can do, just stoping them from getting goods banned etc would be enough, they should even welcome it as the continued sale of goods could lead to more money for them.

Most of all we need to have each patent concidered for uniqueness etc and if it should be given the ok or canceled before any court time etc happens.

The Chinese are already going their own way and companies are either using Googles OS or writing/modifying their own such as Tizen or WebOS. Lets be honest here, the vast majority of people in the world don't know what Cyanogenmod is let alone how to install it safely. They are just looking to buy a phone that can text / twitbook / email and take piccies of their lunch to post. Cyanogenmod is the last thing they want.
