Next-gen Atom CPU price halved to push netbooks

Big_Ted
FAIL

why ???????????

Why would a price reduction of $20-40 make a difference on sales ?

Its still a form factor that has reached its limit unless they can use arm chips or get cheap SSD memory instead.

Sales will only go down as more people switch to tablets as the cheaper android ones hit the market. And lets be honest many who bought a netbook to start with won't bother replacing it but would go for a full laptop instead if its the form factor they want.

The only way sales will improove is if Chrom OS devices take off.......

Motorola Xoom

Big_Ted
Alert

Get some facts straight.........

The micro SD card doesn't work because Google haven't enabled it in Honeycombe yet.......

Thats why a software update will fix it.

Secondly 32 gig ipad =£479 and Xoom is £479 its the same price not more or less......

Thirdly Ethernet ????? WTF ???? why the hell do you want ethernet on a tablet ? full usb slot is bad enougth when you concider how thin the tablet is without a bloody great big lump of a port.....Its what wireless and USB are for.

Lastly, I had an ipad for the best part of a year and now have had the Xoom for 3 weeks and can say that iOS is for non techies and Android is for the rest of us who like to set up feel of screen etc to look like we want.

I love Android 3 and look forward to more aps etc getting better as they are adapted for the tablet. Don't miss th ipad now I am Xooming ahead.

Oh and as for the Asus transformer, Laskys getting a delivery with the dock tomorrow if you are desperate for one

What you are all forgeting is that Virgin are looking at this as a way to offer TV, Broadband and Phone over the fiber not just Broadband.

They will be looking to get £50 plus from each customer not just the broadband fee.

I can forsee a lot of people signing up for this if it becomes available.

This is a dream situation for them, massive extention to potencial costomers without the cocst of doing it themselves.

HTC Android tablet priced up for Blighty's shoppers

Big_Ted
FAIL

WTF.............

They have to be joking........

Who on earth would buy for that price.

You could buy the Motorola Xoom 3G and a £15 stylus for a fiver less.

I can see these flying straight back to HTC as unsold stock.

In fact you could buy an HTC desire and a galaxy tab for not much more.......

Got to be an epic fail...............

Ofcom calls on BT Openreach price cuts for ISPs

Big_Ted
WTF?

What ????????

I can't be reading this right..........

Ofcom want BT to drop the price charge every year.......

So not only do they not get to pass on inflation rises but also get millions per year less...........

Meanwhile the isp's get to increase prices and add the extra they no longer pay each year to boost profit per customer.......

Well you can kiss goodbye to that fiber line you hoping for as BT will have no incentive to invest millions anywhere that LLU is now or could be soon......

UK iPad 2 to cost under £400

Big_Ted
Unhappy

Dam you Steve Jobs...........

You just keep plugging away at making me want the new iPad.

I had convinced myself that more than £400 was too much to pay to replace my version on iPad with iPad2.

Now you go and market it for £399.

Take off my Comet discount and its £359

Take off the £150 I was going to buy a satnav for and its now worth looking again......

£100 extra for GSM version = £499 -£49 discount = £450 - £150 = £300

Give my current one as a family birthday present to sister and no more to spend ther for the rest of the year, another £100 saved.

Now down to £200 for it.............

Dam Dam Dam

Amazon is best hope of a viable alternative to iPad

Big_Ted
Jobs Halo

ok.....................................

Whilst I agree with the basics of your post I must point out that Apple are not controlling the price at all.

They are in fact saying they want 30% of "whatever" you charge.

Its up to the ap creator to set the price themselves.

They are now saying that any ap the sells content must have that content available only through the ap store. That is where I agree its wrong. But again they are not saying what the price is but that it must be the same as on the content providers site, to me this is a way to ensure Apple customers are not ripped off paying more for the use of it on their idDevice.

They should instead insist that any ap that sells content must be sold for a fixed minimum and that they get 30% of that.

After all content providers have a choice of staying or not......

I would also like to see a changed or even multi choice on keyboards for the iPad.

The biggest improovement to it would be arrow keys to move around in text quickly rather than the magnifying glass we have now.

Also would love native divx support built in but that is wishfull thinking......

another fail

How does networker handle people with laptops working in the middle of no-where ?

These people connect via ethernet maybe once a quarter.....

Big_Ted
Thumb Down

fail.......

And how are we suposed to do that for 7-800 remote sites on the tops of hills etc ?

Plus what about all those who forgoot where the sim is of lost it in the last 5 years when not needed......

Its easy to come up with solutions when just one office and a few people but not when spread over sveral counties involving more than a thousand phones plus several hundred laptops etc for data.

Plus PAYG sims don't do data much do they ?

Big_Ted
Flame

WTF

All the people knocking others for having a single supplier of phones get back in the real world not the world your living in.

I work for a Water utility and we have well over a thousand mobiles in use, plus laptops etc using mobile data for work allocation and emails etc.

On top of that we have hundreds of remote sites that have GSM for comunications.

These are done via Vodaphone main centre not local towers at this end

None of these is dual sim etc so doubling up means massive cost implications for remote telemetry plus all the extra sims for mobiles and laptops etc, thats not countig replacing sims.

I'm sure you would be happy to have your water bill raised to cover this cost for something that has only happened once in the 5 years we have used this system.

Come up with a lox/cost free option and fine, if not then just get back to the real world before you post such rubbish about spreading the risk.

After all do you all have Apple Macs on your desks just in case a windows virus infects everything and requires a few hours to fix.....

Memo to iPad mimics: No one wants a $799 knockoff

Big_Ted
Jobs Halo

Its simple............

Apple can sell for the price they do as they know they will make a fortune from itunes apps music etc.

Others with Android on them can't as they don't control the software etc source.

It will be hard to undercut Apple with a piece of kit that is as desirable unless like RIM you have your own ap store.

Apple will be the device of choice for many until someone comes out with something that feels as good in the hand and is much cheaper, otherwise a lot will pay the extra say £50 because its an iPad.

Virgin tempts Brits with fee-free TiVo

Big_Ted
Happy

My title

Its £3 a month for the TiVo sub.

This includes enhanced epg that leaves all others in the shade.

A dedicated 10 Meg Broadband connection so when streaming its doesn't affect your normal connection.

Also aps, just a small number now, youtube ebay etc but Virgin say there will be hundreds in a year.

They are talking to people like spotify and lovefilm as well as many others.

Thats what the £3 a month pays for.

The tickets are only going out to top tier customers, ie you must have XL tv, phone and broadband with them in either a VIP pack or as a triple bundle.

There has already been 1000 picked for install spread around the country as a soft launch to allow installers to get used to the kit etc.

Chinese hackers 'slurped 50 MB of US gov email'

Big_Ted

Thats less than half the bytes than Bill Gates is believed to have spent on his house.....

Virgin unwraps three-tuner über set-top

ISPs under pressure to control online porn

Big_Ted
FAIL

WTF is with these people......

What do thet expect the ISP's to do, look at every website in existence ?

How else will they know which ones to block ?

Or are they calling for Deep packet inspection of everything going through their network .

This is the sort of stupid approach made by people who can barely understand how to turn a computer on let alone how the inter web works.

All we need is a simple price of software that parents can install and put blocks onor decide which websites are allowed........

Oh right there are plenty out there already .....

Virgin demands ISPs end broadband speed 'con'

Big_Ted
IT Angle

Speed, we all need it.

The link for average speeds is http://shop.virginmedia.com/broadband/about-virgin-broadband/speed-matters.html?buspart=6469 for those wondering.

And very telling it is too. No wonder Virgin want the current practice to stop as it will show their offering in a much better light for cable broadband.

Of cource Virgin ADSL broadband is just as bad as the rest. Wonder if they will lead the way with honest speeds on that ?

Motorola lands 16-patent countersuit on Microsoft

Big_Ted
Paris Hilton

what goes here ?

Quote.........

Microsoft infringes with its Windows operating system; digital video coding technology; email technology, including Exchange, Messenger, and Outlook; Windows Live instant messaging tools; and object oriented software architecture...................

Motorola Mobility asks that Microsoft stop using Motorola's patented technology and provide compensation for past infringement

Does that leave any part of windows that Microsoft will be able to continue to use ?

But you have to say they are hardly a "FRAND" to Motorola by taking them to court for asking what they feel is too much "after" already sueing them for patents......

Intel CEO: 'We will win in the tablet market'

Big_Ted
FAIL

Fail again for Intel

Just like with the smartphone / mobile market intel are going to be too late to the market.

Arm processors will be well ahead of intel for many months, see the new smartphone arms that run 4 HD movies at the same time etc. Arm chips are perfect for mobile devices and thats what tablets are.

They may be able to get on a few windows tablets for enterprise business but apart from that they are wasting their time.

Virgin Media introduces P2P throttling

Big_Ted
Flame

get it right will you

Virgin have increased the upload speed that many users have been asking for.

They have also looked at the useage of the traffic on their system and have concluded that the vast majority of their users would get a much better service if they restrict the bandwidth used by P2Pers and Newsgroupies during peak times.

This means that the vast majority of their subscribers will get the service they are paying for and the freeloaders will have to accept that they must change their downloading habits or try to find another supplier who will provide the speeds they are used to and don't shape traffic etc. (Good luck with that).

Get over it, you have had it too easy for too long already downloading illegal stuff at the expence of my internet usage.

I'm sure i saw a little while back that P2P etc was using the majority of all traffic on the net.

Just set your downloads to overnight and use the net for live streams etc etc or go away and leave me with more bandwidth that I can use.

Big_Ted
WTF?

WTF

But you can give up your cable and witch to snail paced ADSL from BT.

So how can you say your stuck ?

You could even go mobile broadband etc.

Freetards suffer for the benfit of other users shock

Freetards suffer for the benfit of other users shock....

I for one am in favour of this. It means that I will be able to stream HD video any time of the day with greatly reduced risk of buffering.

A definate win win in my books.

Oh and for anyone posting "Linux Disro's etc " get a grip, we all know that well over 90% of it is illegal material being downloaded. So why should my legal use of the net be affected by it.....

Big_Ted
WTF?

why should they ?

Why should they as long as mobile can advertise 1 Gb limit as unlimited

Big_Ted
Thumb Down

look before you leap

Before changing look into it carefully, the cap is for restricted speed at peak times for 30 days not the hours as on Virgin.

Virgin Media puts Dave and Gold on the block

Big_Ted
Thumb Down

@ Conrad

Why would any of those named by you want to pay £6 billion for it ?

The only customer they would have is Virgin.

Also the whole point of Virgin selling these channels is to raise cash to expand the network to 1 million new properties as already stated by them.

The worst thing they could do is to give up control of their network which is private and threfore noone else such as Sky can access and allow others to use it and oversubscribe it to the point it is as slow as DSL is for most.

Virgin supply the full up to speed as all should but no others do.

Big_Ted
FAIL

get it right

The channels that Virgin own 50% with the Beeb are not part of the core business.

That has always been telecommunications. Phone and Broadband are their most profitable areas.

As to the BBC having a problem buying these channels thats again not quite correct as they are joint owned by BBC Worldwide a commercial arm of the BBC that would not affect it in any way as licence money is not involved in its purchases.

This would be a good move for both as the BBC would have full control of the channels and Virgin would have £350 million they could invest in expanding their network. Add the £160 million from channels sold to Sky and thats over £500 million for fibre to the home on telegraph poles as reported in stories here as being trialed now.

Its not as good as you think.....

I have read on various forums that not all cabinets are being connected with fibre.

The Glasgow Halfway exchange was done late December and only about 2 thirds were connected.

The only 2 reasons I have seen for this are not economical and may be waiting for council to ok new cabinet and power company to supply.

Also if you would get less than 15 meg on test they will not offer it to you anyway, This has already happened to some people. So don't get too excited if you are on the exchange list as it might still be a long wait.

Unless the equipement can be fitted into small sub postoffices then coverage is only the cities and large towns as only they have main post offices.

Who is going to pay for all the people who live miles away to get to one, especially older people without their own transport.

This whole ID thing is a massive waste of money. OK biometrics on passports I can see as useful for many reasons but why should I need to carry a card when I never travel abroad ?

Might as well put a chip in everyone like they do dogs etc and be done with it.

Police questioned Laker on Monday. He was given a "a formal warning for harassment, which is one level below a caution".

A BAA spokesman said: "We are aware an allegation has been made against a member of staff and we are currently investigating. We treat any allegations of inappropriate behaviour or misuse of security equipment very seriously.".....................

I'm sorry but if the police have given a formal warning for harassment then why are BAA still investigating ?

Surely the police would only have warned him if either there is enough proof or he admitted it.

Therefore BAA are wasting time and money on this and should be taking action now....
