For companies that upgraded to Vista it meant new hardware was needed due to some old kit no longer having drivers for it scanners e.

The same could be true for a lot going from XP to Windows 7 depending on how old and the spec of their current kit, plus it can be cheaper to just plonk a computer on the desk that has been supplied by say Dell with an image that has been signed off on by the IT department than going round and manually updating computers with the need to reinstall software etc.

Its the route we will take in the upgrade from XP to 7 in a few months, the hardware is due for replacement anyway and a team of 20 would have a lot of work upgrading 2000 pc's / laptops.......

Now Google have bought Quickoffice I forsee it being updated and included in a future update to Android ICS and Jelly Bean.

Who will want to spend maybe 3 times as much for a windows machine when then can get a nice Android one that will do everything they want out the box without having the bloatware that is windows Office.

I have many times tapped a number in an email to go to tracking or link to my oder and had a popup asking if I want to dial the number etc.

This is something that I use for numbers but a long press is good enougth to decide to treat as a number for phone or quik tap for link.

Sort that out in a form that really works and you would have something "magical and unique".....

You can keep your surface, I would spend the $800 which will mean more like £1000 and buy an Asus tf300, its a prime in all but name and still have £600 plus for a nice laptop.

Best of both worlds for the same money and 2 of us can have something to use at the same time.

MS have shot themselves in the foot by designing an OS that enterprises will not want and hardware thats aimed at enterprise level budgets. OK windows 8 will be a success but only because OEMS will have nothing else to put on computers. But otherwise forget it, in the IT department I work in Windows 8 is laugthed at for business and from what we have seen so is the surface.......

Most of them will then not bother to bring anything out and just prepare to in the unlikely event they are a big hit.

Either that or it will have to be a 7 inch job and with some of the ones already announced for $199 or less they will not find it easy even when no ipad to go against size wise.....

Google have already slipped HTC a few patents to fight with. They may slip them a few more to be able to call for a ban on Apple imports of the ipad etc.

I'm sure theres something in the bag that Apple are infringing on even if they don't know it yet.

Motorola have enough to tie Apple up for months if not years if they push too hard.

Would love to see them try the same against Google and see if the fallout from all the bans could lead to sense breaking out...

Forget Windows 8

I work for a company that has several thousand desktops, laptops and phones.

We are still on XP and after the best part of 6 months we are finally ready to accept windows 7 will work on our 600 odd legacy apps/programs.

Hell we only just th last fortnight went fron IE6 to IE8 due to compatability issues.

After we finish rolling out Windows 7 we will be planning our next upgrade, the hardware. For that we are looking at thin clients connecting to servers so BYOD is made easier and security also much easier to control.

Will also made updates and software access etc a lot easier.

We will not be looking at Windows 8, more likely would be to switch the OS from windows to something else instead as the desktops won't have an OS and anything that can access the virtual desktop like say a linux distro will do fine.

The only people who will be buying Windows 8 are those with no choice as thats what the OEM has put on the pc they get from Currys etc.

As to the whole pc, talet and phone running the same OS how stupid do you think we are ? here's what would happen, virus gets on someones phone, they bring it into work, everyone equipement including their phones are infected, yeh I can see us allowing that to happen then. We had a big enougth problems with someone bringing in a virus that screwed up our excange servers with emailing all contacts over and over again a few years ago.

No, Windows 8 has no place in the corporate world which is still rolling along on XP and sees a big enough change and training headache going to 7.....

Corporate users? Probably will be fine since start menu is still there but I wonder what the costs will be for user training on new Metro UI. I Also wonder about the costs for apps that may have to be re-written. The migration costs for Win 8 could be unprecedented.

We have only just upgraded from IE6 to IE8 due to old programs and code.

We have about 600 legacy programs in use and I can see a massive problems switching to version 8. It has taken the best part of a year to test and modify them to go from XP to windows 7, I dread to think about try to implement an upgrade to Windows 8......

I know for sure that my sister is going to be getting a new laptop for Xmas and you can bet the first thing she will ask her "Tech Support" ie me is how to sort the computer to run properly......

Lets be honest almost all the traffic on them is copyright material being downloaded illegally. I have one window open for mail, a second for monitoring a telemetry system, athird with Excel for cofiguring data and a forth for editing data in the telemetry system.

On top of this I could have IE open for data from the web plus CS5 as well. This is spread across 2 large monitors.

How the hell am I supposed to work with metro ?

MS have made it clear that windows 7 is the upgrade we will roll out at work and can't even think about windows 8 at all. This also means we will not bother with Windows RT for tablets but will support only iOS and Android for phones and tablets. BYOD again will not allow Windows RT.

Are MS really that stupid that they are cutting off companies from the windows upgrade route or will they see the light and sort this mess out ?

The only chance they have of getting something out this year is to buy Blackberry and use that as a starting point, they could easily get their stuff built into the OS and go from there.

Blackberry is a good fit as it gets the backing it needs to continue in business and facebook gets a brand with its own OS and bag of patents.

They should be able to do a deal that if the Zuck is involved with will be even more overpriced than instagram and MS buying Skype......

Virgin Media have been DOCSIS 3 for quite a while now, I can easily seeing them adding another tie of box with 6 tuners for a couple of extra quid a month for those who would want one and having them as standard say from next year.

It would be another unique selling point over what Sky offer.

6 tuners would also be useful for it to record suggestions as well as wat you program into it along with series links and requests to record anything with say Tom Cruise in it.

I fail to see how Google is doing anything wrong, they chrge people to have their adverts on their sites and also to be a prefered search result.

That being the case of cource those appear at the top along with the most popular click throughs etc.

What would you expect to happen ? Search for a fridge when in London and get results from some small town in the Lake District ?

I go to Google knowing what I want and am able to locate it thanks, I don't want random results or those or other companies. If I want Bing results I will use Bing etc.

They have done for years now, its only the risk of losing out that has them looking to do IPTV themselves.

What must be done is to require by law that streaming movies, tv programs etc must be negociated seperately from linear tv contracts so Lovefilm, Netflix, Box etc can all have a chance.

I'm sorry but VM are not the ones you should blame.

The company building the estate could have laid the cable or asked VM to do so before putting down the tarmac etc at the same time as water pipes etc were being installed.

Too many people blame VM for not being willing to spent thousands laying a cable to their house, why should I as a VM customer have to substidise your install ? Get on to the company who built your house for not providing you wth what you must concider a service that you have a right to.....

BT are a monopoly in the vast majority of the country, where they are not, ie VM areas they are still everywhere wit the poles etc almost all of which were payed for by the taxpayer....the copper it etc not the new fiber etc

Until now BT has refused to allow anyone else to use their cable ducts and poles unless they pay a ridiculous amount of money. Ofcom have stopped that and fairer if not totaly fair pricing is now on the way.

VM have for two years run a test to Woolhampton using BT poles to provide 50Meg BB, TV and phone very successfully; with this "filling in" areas would be simple as no road digging needed. The same system could have rolled out BB to whole swaves of the country.

Now BT who already has a network of copper paid for by the taxpayer wants access to VM fiber as well as getting paid to upgrade their network by the taxpayer.....

So as far as I am concerned Fujitsu should have got the lot if they could deliver what they wanted and BT could like VM access another companies network and so provide compitision.

O2 biggest load of kack in the world, never again is my stance....

Three, great speeds and coverage but very poor custmer service.

Orange/t Mobile, never have a problem with connection unless in the wilds of Snowdonia, with power boost a few month ago am able to get a good signal at home now also.

Vodafone, got onto a limited test a year ago with all you can eat no limits at all plan for £25 a month, ok sounds a lot but included a motorola xoom 3G so worked out at about £10 a month. Have had great spped with it and streamed Netflix for several hours a day whilst on holiday with no problems.

Simple responce to all the above should be first CHECK THE COVERAGE then look into what you want, then buy the plan.

Oh and why go PAYG data only ? on Three they do a 1 month rolling contract sim only that does 1GB data, 100 minutes and 3000 texts for a tenner, seems better to me than data only.....

Lets be honest here, even the most rabid anti Apple person would be hard pressed to be positive about Windows Phone as an alternative to Android if all things were equal.

OK I see a good case for ultrabook type devices but if I was going to spend over $1000 for a portable windows system I would prefer something like a transformer prime with Windows 8 on it (not that I want windows 8) at least you would have both a tablet and a laptop to do your "content creation"......

The big difference is that you have chromeOS as just one of several OS'son a machine and so have choice.

With Windows for Arm MS are blocking any other OS being allowed unless the hardware is locked so you are still restricted.

As to why you would want another browser for years IEhas been behind others with new things for instance tabs took ages to get on IE whilst Opera and Firefox had them.

MS will have to hope the EU don't get involved.

It was them that put most pressure on them with fines and a demand for a choice of browser to be built in that led to the current system.

If the EU decide that others must have full access plus the same rights and first run of the OS as for windows now then they could again be facing a big fine and a possible ban on the software in the EU for non compliance.

That would surely put back any realease till early next year. If I was the Bullmister I would be getting the script kiddies at al working day and night sorting this out just in case a different version to what they want to roll out is needed....

If he is banking on Windows then he is dreaming, no matter how good it is the ipad will be the number one tablet for several more years even if outsold overall by android, and as to phones windows is too restrictive on hardware spec.

Ultrabooks are just overpriced laptops that lets be honest unless they are at least £200 cheaper will not outsale the Air purely on the "I want one" factor.

An even bigger threat to Apple is China

With Lenovo and Huawei getting into the phone and tablet markets in a big way in China we will soon see much cheaper but high spec kit being exported without the big profit margins from Apple etc.

China has learned a lot from making the stuff for the likes of Apple and will undercut them with ease.

This along with Android being 4 and soon 5 later this year will mean the 7 to 10 inch market will be a tough one for any others.

Add to this the extra backing they will get from the Chinese government and they can't fail to make it.

The only hope MS have is from the enterprise market making their system a defacto standard at work but they are going to be too late to the game with Apple and Android already maing inroads especially with BYOD.

I honestly can't see how anyone would buy a MS OS tablet over an ipad if the price is similar especially if they restrict the spec like they have to windows phone. I am not a fan of the Apple walled garden but would buy an ipad over windows 8 any day from what I have seen and read about it.
