The latest atom is designed by Intel to run Windows on a tablet so it will handle it just fine.

And the stylus is for writing and drawing etc, I would imagine that pressing harder would give bold rather than normal in writing and pressure different scales in say grey rather than having to change constantly.

Apart from a few objects such as cube, box, prism etc I don't see that this could would on anything else, for instance a tree or similar would not work, and just imagine, you go to facebook and some nobs face pops out the screen at you. Que dropped ipads......

This will have as much use as some other Apple patents until true holographic screns are available. A standard 3d screen would be as exciting as a nintendo 3ds is now.

On this I can't see what the problem is, we have seen it reported here already in the article about the Jony and the pdf in it. So where is the contempt here when all this is already in the public domain and Apple would have read about it before.

I work on maintaining data on a system and due to the way the company is set up report to a manager in assets who report to the same director as IT.

Obviously then I am in IT and can be approached with all sorts of problems.

I have learned the trick though, I can't even begin to have an idea on how to fix your laptop, desktop, monitor or whatever unless you bring it to me, oh and I am not allowed to fix any company kit as that is the instruction I have had as it can't be logged on the system.

Now I just get the odd person struggle in with a desktop or whatever asking me to take a look, as I have the kit there it usually take a couple of minutes to work out what is wrong, more than half the time its some bad code gotten on so I show them how to roll back to a previous version and never see them again.

Now if I could only do the same with family, a visit to my sister means carrying manuals, a toolkit, various spare cables and adaptors plus copious amounts of calm pills.......

Everyone keeps on about how crap Windows 8 is and it seems to be the Metro interface thats blamed 99% of the time.

I have been running the latest version for a couple of weeks and so far the only time I see it are on startup, press windows key and then on desktop, and the odd occasion I have wanted to access say the control panel.

All the rest of the time I have a desktop that is fully populated with icons to launch programs and open documents.

I have rooted a Google Nexus and burned a new Rom to it, also rooted and added CM9 to an HP touchpad, on top of that been able to do everything I always did without seeing Metro.

So that being the case, is there anything other than Metro being an ugly oversized toysRus interface that people are so negative about.

Yes I hate Metro with a vengance but never see it and the speed of start and shutdown etc is a nice bonus over Windows 7.

This is the most rediculous stance ever from either party.

What should happen is that we in the non US part of the world should stick 2 fingers up to Apple and refuse to allow it to be charged, its a tax on customers for what is lets be honest not something that should be allowed a patent, a copyright on the design yes but no way should it get a patent.

Maybe we will get lucky and people who can do something about this mess in the US government will see just how stupid it is and sort it out at last, I wouldn't count on it though unless Apple get all its kit banned due to Motorola patents or those from Kodak etc.

thats 2 completely differnt things.

And good luck gettint that ban as another EU court ie the UK has already rulled the opposite way.

This needs for aN EU court in the Hague or wherever to look quickly at the evidence and make an EU wide ruling telling Apple to piss off with all its rediculous patents trying to restrict trade and customer choice.

Then they should do the same and decide if Motorola are being fair or not and rule within a couple of weeks on evidence from both sides already given and make a ruling.

These rulings should be non appealable and would hopefully stop someof the noncence of being able to order from Amazon UK for delivery to Germany but not being able to buy inside your countries borders what should be available or not EU wide.

When will the courts relaise how much time and credabilty is being lost on these cases throughout the EU and just stamp on them.....

If my employer was to switch to Azure from local storage we would have many millions of letters etc to upload.

By law we have to keep all data, letters etc that could be required to be look at for a period of 15 years, hell we still have the old Vax machines and tapes stored just in case their needed.

Imagine that could be one way of measuring "objects" rather than live data. I can believe Amazon is almost all live data whilst there is a lot of archive on azure along with the rest.

Ordered mine on the 27th and had no emails or anything from them, even though it showed complet Monday...

pre-ordered from Currys on the 29th as I could get the 16GB for nearly the same as the 8GB with a voucher etc and recieved it today.

Google are not looking good with this lack of communication, I sent a total of 6 requests to cancel starting on the 29th and still have not heard anything about that.

The tablet itself is a dream to use with Jelly bean but the experience of ordering through Google Play Store is a joke.

Thanks for an article that states the bleeding obvious. You use the kit that is best suited for what you want to do not rely on one thing to do everything.

I would never for instance expect to be able to manage with a surface on its own when it comes out, it will need a dock and seperate monitor to be useable in the office, can you imagine your CEO's face if you walk into his office and take away his nice big screen and plonk a surface on his desk and tell him to use that instead....

This will only be fair if there is no ban allowed for minor infringment of patents etc.

ie the slide to unlock case should not be allowed as its a minor patent.

Otherwise it would allow the likes of Apple who have few SEP patents to import without fear if they are in dispute like they are with Motorola whilst at the same time getting Motorola's kit banned on stupid patents.

There must be a requirement to proove the kit that is being requested to be banned is a major breach and that a ban is needed to protect their rights.

Yes, but to test on a tablet you need a tablet, as x86 based ones are not that common and would cost you a load of cash then my point stands.

Oh and as a developer on Android I'd like to point out that most apps are are not in the cubset of "i.e. it's just a regular thing, not a photo-viewing application or similar)" If you want even your "regular" app to be usable then you had better set it for touch as well or release it as a program not an app like say vlc player as apps in the store will need to be available for both RT and x86 to be a success.

Well of course there is.

The Nexus devices are what Google feel the basis of the hardware should be as a demonstration of the operating system etc.

The Xoom was released as a Google Experience Device, basically a Nexus without the label.

All these are released with the statement that they will receive updates direct from Google for Nexus and that the Xoom in the USA would receive the basic Android.

That means that they will be updated fast,if say Samsung wanted to they would roll out the Jelly Bean update within a couple of days, all they would need to do is install it on a few tablets and test them, if they had no hardware conflict then roll it out. However they want their own stuff on them so thats the delay....

3 simple points

On the graph the last 500 years seem to have been above the trend for almost the whole time

As we know greenhouse gasses have increased a lot over the last couple of hundred years and the trend can't just be drwn as a straight kine.

Lastly here we go again, where is the detail ? How many scientists is a large team ? half a dozen ? how many trees tested, how large an area was the sample from ? And why arn't these scientists alarmist when they seem to be saying were heading for another little ice age or worst with their temperature droping graph.....

This judge has said what many of us have been saying for a long time, there is plenty of prior art on tablets and similar devices. How Apple can claim theres is any different I can;t understand. Now the OS etc then yes there is a case for copyright of how it looks and feels but again a patent should not be allowable for it.

Apple are doing all they can to stifle all other companies from doing what they have and that's take something done before and doing it better.

What we need is for someone like the EU to make a law that stops companies from going to court to stop sales of a product on such pathetic reasons as swipe to unlock etc and to punish those who bring a court case that has no real basis but to try to block to face legal penalties.

As for the USA let them stew in their own mess and let us the rest of the world stop this so that innovation can again be the main reason to buy a product and not because someone is the last man standing having blocked what may be something better due to say a patent for something totally unrelated to phones or tablets that was granted 15 or so years ago when windows still ran on dos......

As for me

I have a desktop that is getting a bit iffy on booting up so have bought a laptop with an i5 processor etc, this is so i have a replacement as soon as it dies and can continue to work from home. Otherwise I would not bother to buy new, as long as it does what I throw at it my pc is as high a spec as I need.

I have a tablet for casual use on the sofa and again feel no need to upgrade that just because quad core comes out etc. My better half has just gone from iPad 1 to iPad 2 and then only because we could get a refurb iPad 2 for £259 from the Apple store (getting ready for extra in iOS that won't work on the 1), what with cashback and a voucher the price was £215, ebayed the iPad 1 and got £215.....

After all when was the last time you upgraded your tv just because it got freeview or your car for a new model just because it got bluetooth voice control built in.......
