It won't be the 'institutions' either, just a single scientist leading the group. I'm certainly not going for any UK funding at the moment as seems like a big waste of time. You only need 1 reviewer to write a grump review of your proposal and it's finished even in good times, and now the chance of getting that 1 grump reviewer would seem to have significantly increased. EU money is hard to get anyway, with loads of beurocratic strings attached.

It's worth adding that the probability of getting these projects funded is very small in the first place (3-10%) so a group would not want to reduce their chances by building in any problems i.e. a UK group that the reviewers may not like. Also, theses proposals are very long documents (80 pages) and can take a significant amount of time to write so the head scientist probably just want's to make sure he is not wasting his time/effort.

Years ago, I put linux only farther's PC for a quiet life. I got fed up of questions about virus killers and subscriptions and him clicking on things he should not under windows (not to mention him phoning 'technical support' lines ). I did not really want to do it at the time because I thought it would be more hassle. Now, the only time I touch the box, is to upgrade it to the next release.

Left these guys when they got broken into last time. It was well past the end of my contract, so should have been easy matter to cancel. The call center operator spoke really poor English - not quite enough to do his job. He tried to convince me to stay, even though I had told him I defiantly wanted to leave. After a while on the phone, he told me everything had been candled and I would only pay one more months bill. Then they kept billing me for three months despite phone calls and complaints. It was only when I threatened to report them to offcom that they actually stopped taking money. I would never go anywhere near these people again - real pain in the back side.

I've got a win 7 VM with 500Mb free disk space that I boot from linux when I need to fiddly formatting on word documents. I have not booted the thing for months, I'm dreading booting it, because I know it's going to be a whole world of hassle.

For the last few years I've run linux on my machines, mainly because of my work requirements. I've found that the only drivers I've ever had to install are Nvidia/AMD drivers as pretty much everything else is auto detected. Recently, I've found that the open source Nvidia/AMD drivers are good enough not to bother installing the proprietary drivers. I had not used windows for a while, it seems odd to me why all the drivers are not just pulled from the updates thingy.

I think there was a very good defcon talk on this a few years ago, where some guy downloaded the firmware updates for IP cameras and extracted root passwords from the binary blobs. Quite a good talk as far as I can remember.

Very often software decides if we live or die. For life critical systems it is only fair that the source code be available for customers to inspect.

But if they were hashed then Tesco would not be able to send you your forgotten password without them brute forcing their own database. Fedora 15: More than just a pretty interface

I'm sure fedora 15 has many nice new features. Shame I won't be using it thought BECAUSE of the new Gnome 3.0 interface. I tried to use it the other day and it sucked. Everything needed more mouse clicks or key presses to do. It seems to be a GUI designers wet dream rather than a working interface. I have stuck with fedora/RH over the years from pre F1 to F14 and now I am looking for a new distro. Very sad.

GNOME 3: Shocking changes for Linux lovers

I tried Gnome shell yesterday. It sucked big time. Here are the reasons why:

1. No task bar.

2. I tried to tab through the open windows, but the tabbed windows were grouped/nested and thus needed more key presses to select the terminal I wanted.

3. No minimize maximize buttons. wtf?

4. I could not make new panels to customize my desktop.

5. As there were no panels, I could not make clickable shortcuts and thus needed more than one click to open a new terminal. (fail)

6. Everything is animated, I don't want animated menus in fact I don't want animated anything. I just want menus to open so fast I can't see them open.

7. Where is the system tray?

8. Where has the weather gone from the clock?

9. Why has the global time gone from clock? I need this.

10. Is it me or could I not put files on the desktop?

11. The clock seemed to be stuck in the middle of the bar on the top of the screen, why can't I move it. Why?

All in all I found gnome 3.0 to be a total pain to use, fine if you are four years old and the computer is a play thing and you want random animations to impress your friends, but as a power user who needs to do real work and quickly it just does not cut it. It looks to me as if it is a developers wet dream which for some reason got released. All I want is a stable fast desktop which works 100% of the time. No animations, no funky menus.

Fail.

Gnome people please do a reality check asap or I will be looking for a KDE distro - and I never did like KDE.

As a London cyclist I am looking forward to this scheme coming into being with amusement and horror. London roads are a death trap “In 2005, 20 cyclists were killed and 338 injured on London's roads. In 2006, 18 were killed and 349 injured and last year 14 died and 253 were injured.” - evening standard. At the best of times fit young local cyclists get killed. I can not imagine the consequence of letting an unsuspecting European tourists loose on the roads of London. For a start the cycle network is so poor it is a joke. Hardly any of the major roads have cycle paths on them, the ones which do the cycle paths are put in as an after thought, with lampposts right in the centre of them. Then there are kens bendy buses don't get caught between one of those turning left and and a metel railing, you will die. The concept of a joint bus-taxi-minivan-motorcycle-lorry cycle lane – another death trap. The road condition is dreadful with manhole covers sticking out of the tarmac or pot holes so deep they will throw you off your bike. The list goes on, cycling in London is not for the faint hatred.
