According to the article, it isn't the daylight so much as the lost hour of sleep.

Supposedly this causes car accidents and dozens of fatalities every year in the USA.

So this is only a problem with the spring switch to summer time, the autumnal switch back gives everyone an hour extra sleep and so presumably saves dozens of lives.

My proposal, is we put the clocks back every autumn but abandon the crazy "spring forward"

But what about the farmers having to take the wheat in an hour earlier - or whatever it is the farmers always complain about ?

The Eu could simply solve this by having members countries switch between French and Belgian time as the parliament moves between Strasburg and Brussels

You've got to be really quick to get the lid on.

The difference in the two systems.

The USA swaps the establishment after the election so that all the functionaries are politically aligned with the new leader and ready to do his (or conceivably her) bidding.

The UK swaps the leader before the election so they are politically aligned with the establishment and he (or she) is ready to do their bidding.

A large part of the federal government turns over with the new administration.

If you have to plan to replace half the civil service, and everyone from Air Traffic control to the Whitefish authority it takes a while.

But since you don't have the problem of an institutionally Conservative/woke Marxist [delete as applicable] civil service opposing the will of the newly democratically elected Labour/Conservative government - the US government is able to be much more efficient.

We keep lots of infrastructure on old electronics, I think we still source 5.25 floppies for the underground here and more than one nuclear power plant is running on 60s era hardware.

I suspect a lot of the vital national infrastructure for the next century is going to be an ARM chip running an emulator of an X86 running software originally written for a Vax that was a port of an earlier design on a PDP.

So if the only obsolete tech you have to support is in museums - you're doing a good job !

Give them pension in the form of Boeing shares, just like the CEO. Then when management and labour all work together for the greater good - their pension increases

Github had to jump through a bunch of hoops to be allowed to have individual users from Iran , they say they are now working on allowing Syrian, and ironicaly Crimea, access.

Just have a slight concern about the combination of 'patriotic' politicians who don't understand technology, a DoD/DoJ that is still thinking in cold war terms and open source being dependant on US corporations that are wary of legal risks.

Except it's not the open source people that are injecting politics.

I can't visit the company that does our vacuum chamber welding, because I'm not a US citizen and their site has rules, I assume they do work for the US DoD.

Suppose the same applied to Linux. If it's used in the F-whatever fighter or in US nuclear plants then should only US citizens be allowed to contribute?

Yes the concern is that a bunch of politicians, the same ones that were asking Zuckerberg how they turn off the Facebooks, decide that we aren't allowed to accept code contributions from people in countries they don't like. Consider how that list of countries may change come January.

If the prohibition extends to existing code it's going to become unworkable - or more realistically - just expensive, as we have to pay Redhat etc for proof that we have pure approved Linux to use in a system for public use. Or you can just use Microsoft and be able to check the box proving that you have no Venezuelan/Cuban/Iranian/Chinese/Belgian code in the system.
