Still reasonable to imagine Microsoft weren't thrilled about a future of small cheap Windows-free laptops

When, a couple of years later, the Netbooks started appearing Microsoft had some very restrictive ideas about what you could ship without losing access to your Windows licenses for your mainstream products

I think this was the problem. The laptops were specifically designed to need very little power (transmissive LCD IIRC) be easily repairable, rugged, waterproof etc etc and were filled with lots of 'educational' software. They were every wish-list feature of every aid-worker.

What the market needed was old Windows laptops that young adults could use to learn Windows and get a job in an office in the city - probably doing Nigerian prince 419 scams

Funny the only other place where western companies produce expensive massively over-spec'd but useless kit with no input from actual end-users is military.

Depends how you measure contribution

A 'never worked in her life' widow living off her husband's public sector pension in a house that's worth a £M cos it's in the right postcode is a contributor, but the immigrant nurse looking after her and earning £49K is a threat to the national well being.
