Today Germany announced 10Billion euro subsidy to build cheaper cars, only German car companies were allowed to bid to receive the money - VW Golf's will go on sale across europe for 5grand.

Surrey !

Thank god - finally somebody is doing something to help the impoverished hell hole of desperation that is Surrey.

Hopefully this will end the tragic cycle of unemployment, crime and despair that has for so long blighted the home counties since the pheasant mines were closed.

German city dumping OpenOffice for Microsoft

Re: What amazing modern MS Office facilities do they need?

But if you are using OO internally and mandate open formats (which as an Eu govt you are supposed to do) then incompatibility with MS isn't really an issue. It's like claiming that they should stop using German because it causes problems for English visitors.

There is probably a real (and profitable) market for a Word processor with fixed headline/sub/etc styles and only 2 fonts. A powerpoint clone that doesn't do dissolve/fade animations or fscking sound effects. And for many users - a spreadsheet suitable for doing expenses claims.

I wonder how many Billions have been wasted by people in offices reformatting Word docs - especially idiots that can't use styles (or us geniuses that can't work out how to apply modifications to styles since Office2003). Making fancy powerpoints which include 6 obligatory slides explaining the history or departmental organisation of the company before you get onto the actual info.

It's not the auditors job to say you are an idiot for paying $12Bn for this company.

It's the auditors job to say that their sales/costs/profits are what they claimed.

In practice there is bound to be some detail of non-transferable license revenue counted under the non-reccuring monthly account instead of the semi-deprciated (I'm making this shit up) pre-tax forecast .... to allow them to claim that they were misled.

Unless it's purely a parent company level "Marathon is now Snickers" thing you are screwed.

After all, the new owners must be better/smarter/etc than you because they were the ones that took YOU over.

So unless you are a senior CXO at the victim with some golden handcuffs you are automatically at the bottom of the pile in the new organisation.

Re: Madness I tell you

The previous poster said you wouldn't evolve a rat population that was immune to the poison because no rat could eat any amount and survive.

But you could effectively evolve a rat population that was "immune" if there was a subset of rats that refused to eat the poison (for whatever reason) and passed that behaviour onto their offspring.

There are lots of examples of indirect/societal evolution like this in the animal world. It's often missed on a simple biological model

Re: Sony perhaps?

The general opinion is that Sony tanked because the engineers didn't have to listen to the greedy CEO and shareholders.

Products were created without any consideration of what they would cost to build, what they would sell for and what the market wanted.

They created proprietry standards for everything because no salesperson could tell the engineers to use standard parts rather than invent their own "better" solution.

And every engineering group within Sony saw every other part of Sony as the main competition

Power to the people - if you can find a spare socket

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

Re: Don't forget 'Elf 'n' Safety

We got nice heavy duty metal 8socket power bars to fit to our work benches. But they needed an electrician to come and wire them up.

Some bright spark (literally) had a brilliant idea. He only needed 7 of the 8 sockets and had a spare lead with a moulded on plug, all he had to do was cut off the IEC end and wire on another plug. He then plugged it between the wall and a spare socket.

For years it happily passed PAT - well the test machine said it was earthed and the live/neutral was the right way around. Then one day somebody came along and unplugged the end plug and managed to grab the pins.

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

Re: Rond hole sockets?

Yes but in the event of a foreign invasion we can just lay our proper BS133 plugs, pins up, along the beaches and stop tanks landing.

If they had plugs in 1066 we wouldn't have had an invasion and we would all be speaking sort-of German (that doesn't quiter work somehow)

Re: Exclusive triumvirate?

Well if you want something for a really trivial mission, like - totally autonomously search a a few sq miles of ground for a single person using visible/IR cameras and drop a package to them while automatically also staying inside aviation authority required perimeter and handling any failures in your drone and have it automatically return if it has any problem.

Then you would just need any group of students - http://www.uavoutbackchallenge.com.au/

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

Re: If you encrypt something more than once...

>I wouldn't think that re-encrypting (with different keys) would weaken the crypto in any way. If it did then the first thing a cryptanalyst would do with ciphertext would be to encrypt it again to introduce that weakness.

If knowing that the inner file is a certain encryption allows you to guess the properties of certain bytes (eg checksums) then you can use this with a brute force to check when you have a hit. This is what the online truecrypt crackers do.

Obviously re-encrypting a ciphertext doesn't help crack the first layer - just the layer you have added!
