The nice thing about being a big multinational in a small country is that you can ensure that their regulations are "business friendly". Like the way Eire's data protection office is staffed by a single intern who works every other tuesday.

Because they are good for Ireland/Luxemburg etc. They wouldn't had a chance of attracting these corporations simply based on their home market so they make it tax free and score on visits/lawyers/hotel rooms etc.
The real problem is going to come when other countries decide to compete. Romania decides that if you open a brass plaque office in it's capital it will approve any drug for Eu use with no questions. Greece decides that for 500euro it will give any refugee an Eu passport and a flight to Germany?

Instead of sending £££ to the Eu to be spread out across the continent with £ coming back to the UK you could simply send £ (or perhaps ££) direct to the region.
"of research" is the tricky bit - they can get very broad on how an idea is based on your research.
They also have(had?) a blanket policy saying they own everything, you get 10% or so - not much of an incentive for you to leave the comfy job and create the next ARM/Tesla/HP

We already use use dendro to calibrate C14 because we could measure the C14 level in each ring and correct for the variation in C14 production (due to the sun) = makes C14 more accurate.
This says that there were a couple of C14 spikes that were so obvious that if you find them in a tree ring it was exactly that year. So it give you an absolute point to peg tree ring data to for around that time - so makes tree more useful because you don't have to count back from a more modern matching sequence.
These brave men being forced to climb to dangerous heights ( > 0.345m ) without proper fall -arrest equipment to handle potentially dangerous flags.

Which is the only justification of these policies.
If I am black and I believe that tech companies don't hire black engineers then it isn't logical for me to go $50k in debt and spend 4 years getting a tech degree if it isn't going to pay off.

If you are hiring me as a contractor I grant you a permanent license to certain libraries/utilities/boilerplate I have written in the past. If you want me to open source that then I need compensating for writing it again or for the fact that I have lost my competitive advantage with other clients.
I can imagine "the usual suspects" billing the government for re-writing 100000s of lines of SAP/Oracle/etc boiler plate to be open sourced rather than giving away their in house code

It's one of the first cases that convinced many companies that it's cheaper and safer to pay trolls a few $100K when they first ask rather than risk going to court - and so created the patent troll industry
It wasn't the person giving the grant that dropped the Sheffield group it was the person from the collaborating university in europe. They were jointly applying for the grant and the other groups felt that if in 3years when it was granted the UK was no longer a member then they (the europeans ) wouldn't get it.
It's like bidding on a massive multi-year civil engineering project with a dodgy 3rd world country that you think is about to be taken over by communist rebels - you might think twice before committing yourself.

I did nearly hit a Landrover once in a green country lane. It pulled out of a gap in the hedge and I didn't see it - because the owner had painted it in camouflage pattern.
I reckon that "I didn't see it" would have been a valid defence since the owner when to a lot of effort to make it so that people couldn't see it.
