Looking around my west-coast startup.

We are 10% each Brit, Isreali, Russian, Indian. 30% Asian immigrant, 30% Asian 1st generation native. We have a single WASP native. Pretty much the mix of the local tech community.

Yeah for us, diversity awards all round. Except we don't have any African-Americans, or hispanics - we should be 25% black/hispanic. We have exactly equal numbers of Jews and Muslims but there are 100x as many Muslims in the world as Jews - so we are obviously racist.

We are almost 50:50 male female. But the average salary for the men is >50% higher than the women. That's because the founders, CEO, CTO, CFO and engineers are men. The sales marketing and QA and office staff are all women - so we are obviously sexist.

That's why we deliberately hire illeterate school drop puts. We found that many of the applicants for chief surgeon had attended elite medical schools.

There was an interview on our local "women in tech" quango. Some poor (financially) women with a non-traditional education background (ie didn't finish school) had been marketed into borrowing $30k for a few week bootcamp to learn programming.

She is then quoted "now when I apply for those jobs I know I have the skills". So when she loses out on the Google internship to somebody who has an MIT CS PhD or some kid who was reading Linux kernel source since the age of 10 and created a new language - it's because of discrimination.

It's not the scanner's fault

A drug cart in an emergency room has a lock, it's a weedy little lock sufficent to stop some passer by helping themselves. It isn't proof against a prolonged attack by a group of bank robbers. If you wanted to make the drug cart proof against a directed attack by a state level attacker it would be just a little bit more expensive and inconvenient to use.

But it doesn't need to be because it is installed in an area where access is relatively controlled and people are watching it.

The same with the scanner, it should be protected by the hospital's network security. If they want to put it on a public facing net then they are going to have to pay for a military grade secured system and have to deal with the inconvenience of the necessary access controls.

They are also going to have to pay for the weeks/months of testing necessary everytime Windows releases an update and the downtime while the scanner is disconnected until the patch has been tested.

Money. VCs don't travel and their lawyers don't like to do an work - so the US funding vastly outnumbers Canadian sources. So most good people head south.

This is for startups, you can't sponsor yourself for H1B. And nobody except megacorps and Tata get H1Bs anyway.

To stop the investor visa trick where you bring $1M investment from china and then immediately pay someone in China $1M for services - this required you to have investment from US VCs. This gave the VCs a small advantage in negotations - since the founder's visa was dependent on accepting the deal the VC offered.

In reality the system was so incompetent you have to think conspiracy. Here in Canada there are lots of US startup visa "refugees". Stories of applications being rejected because they didn't have a fax number, or had to have a US bank account before being allowed into the county, or their name on their paperwork didn't match the US online forms - which wouldn't allow non-Latin characters.
