Also a convenient way to deal with disruptive elements and other enemies of the state.
Impound all their expensive electronic devices for analysis for the typical 3 years, wait till they buy more, repeat.
It's common over here to use against producers of "artistic images of the female form". The law says the police can inspect the records that show the models are >18. They interpret that to mean take away any computer that might have the records on it and keep for 24-36 months to check them, and of course cameras have computers and memory cards so you take all those as well,
Because the ones that don't become software engineers will still have to use computers
And so when some future Amber Rudd says - computers will predict future terrorists from ultrasound scans before they are born - people will have some idea that this is bollocks.
Back when we used to teach chemistry and physics we might have had fewer people insisting on buying cleaning products and food made without chemicals.
how you tie together a database based on house numbering ... and onother with an email address and Pin
You could post the pin to the house number - banks seem to manage it.
Or you could just enter your license number to login to iPlayer. Duplicate "leaked" license get blocked.
Must be half a dozen lines of SQL - so only £200M at typical government IT contract rates
Over here on the left pond paramilitary describes any organisation with ranks and uniforms.
We have a paramilitary division (*) that does a paramilitary version of one of our products - for sale to coast guard and marine rescue.
* I always picture them as sitting around in cubicles in black balaclavas and combat jackets.
There is much clever tweakage in the mask layout for modern bugger-me-thats-not-many-nm finfet fabrication. Making a mask clone would give you a roughly feature equivalent GPU clone - whether it would work or not is a different matter. So any customer with half decent incoming inspection would reject you.
Copying an 8um design rule 6502, when tracks were allowed to go round corners is a different matter
I use Microsoft's cloud service - I don't have any control over who their backbone is and what the SLAs are. If pre-cloud I had a contract with a specific online service I would likely know where my data was, and who to call when it went wrong.
Instead I find out from el'reg how and why MSFT is fscked - while MSFT's own service page is saying "we are investigating reports of outages"
Until they invent a way of turning themselves off and on again
Try US petrol pumps.

Do you have an air miles card Y/N ?
Would you like to sign up for an airmiles card Y/N ?
Are you sure, they are very nice Y/N?
Are you really really sure Y/N ?
Do you want a discount Red Bull Y/N
Car Wash Y/N

Still not as bad as the ones with a screen that start playing daytime-TV at full volume as soon as you lift the nozzle. It's a bit weird to be filling your car and have the pump scream "Hemorrhoids? You should try new xanthitikilax" at you.
I'm feeling better now, just need to have a little lie down.
I thought there was a standard for marking whether internet packets were good or bad ?
If we could just accept the Kinsey scale we could all be numbers instead of acronyms...
If you assigned a real number to amount of maleness and another imaginary one to amount of femaleness then we could all just be a simple point on a complex plane.
With the extra advantage that the rules for multiplication are simple and widely understood
