Whizzes' lithium-iron-oxide battery 'octuples' capacity on the cheap

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

Re: Oh look, another one.

The problem isn't even the mass media - they don't pickup these stories.

It's the University publicity dept that crawl the research labs looking for anything that is potentially commercial-able or even just newsworthy.

The announcement has put the university of wherever in the news, to potential students, to alumni, ro donors, to startup investors - with a bit more spin it could be known as "the" place fro battery research.

Even if this research goes nowhere the publicity is probably worth a few $M

Nvidia: Using cheap GeForce, Titan GPUs in servers? Haha, nope!

Re: Unenforceable.

In the USA it probably wouldn't withstand doctrine of first sale. Global Megacorp Supply Inc buys the cards and agrees to the Eula then sells them to Global Megacorp Datacenters Inc who operate the center - but without the clause.

Proposed Brit law to ban b**tards brandishing bots to bulk-buy tickets

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

Bands / shows want to maximise their profits.

They could advertise tickets for the market price - but it would look bad if hero of the people Bono sold tickets for £2000. So they sell a tiny fraction of the tickets for £50 - and then run their own secondary market

UK security chief: How 'bout a tax for tech firms that are 'uncooperative' on terror content?

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

Re: "terror content"

Like Icelandair ?

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

Is there any evidence that that has ever worked?

Yes for a mere billion quid you can convert a bunch of terrorist supporting religous extremists into a support and trust partner in government

Re: How difficult is it really?

So we subsidise conifer plantations so that in the event of war we will have 20years supply of paper pulp - but all our natural gas comes from Russia ?

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

Re: How difficult is it really?

"There are other reasons to subsidise farming ..."

I'm sure the WTO and all our new trading partners will see it exactly like that

We subsidise UK farmers so they are cheaper than Canadian wheat or US chicken and they simply tack a 50% import duty on Dutchy Original Oat Cakes and Richard Curtis movies - or whatever it is that the UK is goign to export once all the multinationals move out

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

How difficult is it really?

1, Subsidy payments to farmers stop

2, Computer system to process them is turned off

Re: Hate much?

Why would corporations repatriate money and be taxed on it - even at 15% ?

At the moment Apple can borrow money from Apple (Bermuda) and pay 15 % interest, which it gets a tax write-off on, and then us that to buy back its own shares.

Somehow this will benefit the average American by $4000 / year

Re: Bank Vault locks - cardboard doors

The problem is that those who hold the high value secrets might know this but their bosses have a timeline of the next prime ministers questions.

Would it be worth risking a backdoor into AES to get some dirt on the EU Brexit negotators? What about on the DUP - that should be worth a £Bn. Or the 11 rebel MPs ?

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

It is more likely that a deliberate weakness in the algorithm makes it easier ie practical for a nation state to crack rather than just a magic backdoor key that decrypts all the data.

Getting computers to extract and measure features smaller than the resolution element, or below the noise floor is what we have been doing with them for 40years. Of course smaller than a pixel AND below the noise floor is trickier but with good data it is easy.

We are currently taking medical images (CT and MRI) with only 1/10 the resolution and processing it to get the same image as the full res scan - but with a fraction of the patient scan time and dose.
