In this case it is the opposite way around.

IIRC in the 80/90s New York did ban touch tone on public phones so you couldn't send messages to pagers.

Drug deals were the major use of pagers after medics got cell phones.

I assume there is no more illicit drug use in the USA now that pagers have gone away

It's a tax thing.

There are lot fewer ways of avoiding tax for the regular worker than in the USA.

So workers that were in high demand went to their employers and said - I'm out of here, rehire me on monday as a contractor for the same amount and job/desk.

The employer avoids social insurance contributions and sick/holiday pay.

The contractor gets to pay themselves in (was upon a time) 10% taxed dividends, paid no insurance (because they had zero salary) and claimed their car/spare bedroom/laptop/phone/cat etc as expenses

That's precisely why you should back book/album projects.

An artist without a hugely successful publishing deal behind will not be able to afford to take the time to write a book. Even a successful author who wants to write a book in a different genre might not be able to get an advance big enough to live on.

Kickstarter is arguably a better deal for both the artist and the readers/listeners than the traditional publisher model

Stupidity isn't necessarily a crime.

I can choose to pay upfront to a kickstarter and take the risk in return for getting it cheaper/earlier or I can wait until it's available at Walmart and buy it with the rest of the punters.

Of course the chance of anyone making a successful electro-mechanical consumer product on their first attempt is zero, but not knowing that is equally the buyers fault.
