The police car's onboard licence plate reader (mistakenly) identified a car with an expired tag and so naturally the officer drove at 70mph through a housing estate to persue this threat to national security.

The problem is that TCAS is always for no apparent reason. If you decide to ignore it you are likely to crash into the traffic it was warning you about

It's like saying ignore the red flashing lights ahead on a motorway and just drive normally

Not quite, the problem was that the pilots were confused about whether they were in a stall (too slow) or Mach buffet (too fast) because of bad airspeed indicators and then because the computer behaved differently once it realized the air speed was faulty
