Back in the day, before any of you iPhone users were born, the CIA did something similar to the USSR.

They released stories that they had "hacked" chips begin sold to the USSR to cause various pipeline explosions. It wasn't true of course - it's hard to hide a rootkit in a 8008.

The USSR would deny it, Gulag some 'counter-revolutionary saboteur' maintenance worker and get ultra-paranoid about their entire infrastructure - which was the whole point of the exercise. And the US would do a "you might think so, I cannot possibly comment".

So tomorrow when a seized Aeroflot Airbus that has had no proper maintenance falls out of the sky - are the Russians going to blame their own incompetence or point at western backed cyber-attacks that we have all been proclaiming ?

It's also a nice cash grab. You have to pay the UK registrar for a .co.uk address why shouldn't they also charge you for your .com address for UK users? Especially when it's advertised as "sovereignty" and "protecting children online"

A future Trump might threaten to cut Europe from ICANN over some trade dispute so the EU is going to need its own system and force all companies doing business there to pay for a .eu address.

It's going to be like back in the 80/90s when 3rd world countries made $$ from connection charges for telephone calls from rich countries and you had all those callback services. You're going to need VPN to email home to India or Philippines.

If ICANN is just another US government power then cutting off Russia is fine, as is ignoring activities of its allies. But it's then no longer AN internet. China will have their own separate system, Russia will join that along with any 3rd world countries that what Chinese investment.

So we'll gave 2 Internets and which site Google.com will resolve to will depend on who the provider you connect to buys their chips from.

Ban foreign software and you promote internal use of open source or the writing of native alternatives.

Just allow everyone to pirate Windows and there is no local software, no innovation, no future trade with Russian software companies but a brain drain of Russian programmers as soon as they can travel.

I suspect Belarus is even more fucked.

Short term it is going to have an army of unpaid and unfed Russian troops camped in it.

Medium term Russia is going to asset strip it of food and materials they can't get from the west.

Longer term we are going to get back into trade with Russia as soon as possible, we need their commodities, they need our money. Nobody needs to trade with Belarus and nobody will want to spend the political capital to trade with an enemy. Europe isn't going to be welcoming starving Belarusian refugees.

To be honest the whole German banking system has a bad reputation.

There are lots of hardworking German savers who put the money in the bank, the banks all want to play at doing Wall St stuff like London does, so you get tiny local banks suddenly being invited to play poker with the big boys. Somehow it all gets funnelled through DB.

Germany's financial regulator also has a very lenient attitude to German banks - if they are doing stuff with foreigners that's an export and anything to do with exports must be supported at all costs.

I meant they might supply M1 cores to NVidia to use in NVidia's supercomputer/cloud GPUs

It doesn't compete with Apple's products and it gives them extra volume to justify more R&D by Apple and TSMC.

Apple only make chips for their own computers now.

They aren't going to making SoCs for Samsung or selling M1 cpu Dell laptops

But they don't have a cloud business so a deal with NVidia to put an M1 on a GPU for machine learning in the cloud could work for everyone.
