Or it depressed individual wages, if you had no skills and were competing with cheap immigrants for fruit picking jobs, but raised overall wages because it grew the economy and created jobs.
You could go back to guilds, have all developers make £M but there would be no jobs for developers because nobody could afford one.
Any american that qualifies for this visa is going to see a massive drop in medical care coming to the UK.
Medical costs in the US are insane and options really suck if you are poor, black and/or live in Alabama.
But if you have a Stanford CS PhD and work for a FAANG with their medical insurance - then moving to London is going to be a bit of a surprise when you sprain your ankle playing squash and expect to get an MRI on the NHS within an hour.

In fact the NHS is freeloading off them. They will be paying top rates of tax which will go to the NHS care of the elderly, where nearly all health spending goes. Young graduates aren't a drain on the NHS whatever their skin colour
Profit is not the same as market cap.
It had an income of $1.27Bn, Softbank are cadgy about it's profitability (adding or subtracting one time sales of 51% to china depending on who they are talking to)
But even if they have a 50% operating margin - you are paying >$60Bn for a company that makes $500M profit? That's a pretty long term payback if you are doing this purely for the dividends
The problem is that ARM's model isn't that profitable,
It can only charge licensees bugger-all% of what it would cost to make their own design or switch to RISC-V.
Large scale architecture licensees gain most value but pay even less.
ARM's only value to a buyer is to stop a competitor owning it.
You own the resulting design, I just wonder if you can legitimately claim to be the inventor (for patent purposes) when you don't know how it works.
This already happens with antenna design. There are mobile phone antennas designed by genetic algorithms where there is no process to understand the design.
That could be the strategy.
The initial filing and first few years of fees are fairly low - the cost is all in preparation, lawyers, responses, appeals etc. Especially in the USA if you have in-house legal it can be reasonably cheap in bulk.
So an AI sprouting Markov chain gibberish (of the level of amanfromMars1) could be used to threaten competitors, Look at our 100,000 patents, just have your lawyer go through all of them and check you don't violate any - otherwise we will sue you for millions.

The purpose of patent law is to encourage inventors to make inventions public for the benefit of personkind - rather than to keep them secret so they can't be stolen.
In return the government grants a temporary monopoly to reward the inventor.
None of this matters whether the inventor is a man, women, child, mutant hamster or AI.
Ok suppose there you are using a CFD package that uses neural nets/genetic algorithms/adiabatic solvers/magic pixies etc, and it outputs some hull design which is more efficient and you can't explain why - have you 'invented' it ?
Should you get the patent, or the software, or the software creator ?
Also a question of why it's a $.
If there has to be 'a consideration' for it to be a contract (which arguably it isn't - i'm effectively signing the assignment under the threat of being fired) it could be a coffee from our free machine or a sweetie from the bowl in reception

I think that's because admirals are much cheaper than ships and defence funding cuts never seem to get as far as the pink gin supply.
But navies do suffer from importance = size of crew commanded. So a small highly automated stealthy missile platform capable of wiping out an entire fleet, but with a crew of 3 , never seems to get funding
Airbus aircraft make a characteristic growling noise from under the floor when they push back.
Legend is that since Airbus are so automated it's extra important that the pilot doesn't touch the computers, so they have a kennel with a spare dog.
(It's a backup hydraulic reservoir or something equalising when the engines start)
