Rocket motor nozzle shapes are very different for a rocket burning at sea level air pressure and in vacuum. Starting the rocket at 40,000ft, with 25% sea level air pressure, means you can design a rocket nozzle much closer to optomised for vacuum

Closed source apps - I need to jump through a whole bunch of internal processes to use an external library, if it's also closed source product it will take a year for legal/purchasing to sort it out.
Opensource I'm going to pull in every existing command line/logging/networking/etc lib I can and each of these are going to pull in others etc etc.
Doing the product I need to have everything provably built from source (I even need a Fortran compiler for a Blas based library) but for R&D I can easily see myself leaking .ssh keys cos Spyder included some package which included some other package which was compromised.
Were those really a distraction or just clever marketing?

There is a great American Life podcast on Toyota trying to explain this to American car makers. Ironically the plant they built is the one Telsa use in California
It wasn't just build engines badly. The US companies paid/penalised workers on their specific task - if the previous part was faulty you would just smash your stuff on top, even if that meant breaking both. Cars left the assembly line as a right-off when it could have just meant stopping to replace a stripped bolt.
