Texas mulls law forcing ISPs to block access to abortion websites

Re: Freaks

I know some of you woke liberals might whine about dumping waste on poor countries - but have we thought of giving Texas back to Mexico?

Semiconductor industry: To Hell with the environment, start building fabs already

Re: Still wondering....

Need seismically stable - so west coast is out

Need people so north middle bit is out

Need to have some foreign people work there so south is out

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

Simple process

1, Decide that having all the worlds chips made in Taiwan is a national security risk

2, Redirect 5% of the defense budget to building semiconductors on-shore

3, Begin planning process.

3.1 Someone objects to planning application

3.2, Promise to employ enough of the local council's family + members of any local community objectors until objections go away

4, Planning process put on hold for 5 years because a heron nested within 10miles of the site 3 years ago

5, Decide to build new fab in Taiwan

You think the party of small government and the free market will immediately cancel this socialist program ?

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

Re: Yeah, they will game the system

>the profits from those Fabs could be extensive.

No they won't. If the return in capital was likely to be more than T-bills then the capitalists would be fighting to invest.

The reason Taiwan did this is that the returns for a small relatively poor country, and assuming you are a monopoly, were slightly better than the alternatives.

Might be worth doing as 5% of the defense budget. But even assuming half this is actually spent on fabs, it's purely a payment for strategic reasons

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

Re: If only there was a way

But what would you call the people who "held shares" in this "capitalism" ?

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

If only there was a way

For the government investment providing the capital to a business endeavour to receive a proportion of the profits.

We could call it "capitalism" - it might catch on.

chipmakers won't be allowed to funnel CHIPS dollars into stock buyback programs

Of course not.

Revenue from all other sources = $xM

Stock buyback = $xM - but that all came from other sources

Biden wants chipmakers to provide childcare if they want billions in free money

To the Moon? Emojis can be financial advice, says judge

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

>buy IBM stocks and he said "Oui"

I would assume they were being sarcastic

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

Re: emojis used in certain situations can only "objectively mean one thing" – financial advice

So by indicating that they believed these stocks were going to the moon (with rocket emojis) they are obviously morons, so any reasonable investor would assume the stocks would tank and short them !

So by being demonstrably idiots, the WSB crowd are offering sure-fire investment advice - and so should be regulated.

But if they were carefully regulated financial advisers then any investor would assume they knew no more than any other adviser (ie their predictions were worthless) and so not act on them !

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

But anything sold as "collectable" or "limited edition" is obviously being offered as an investment.

Not sure if claiming the plates featuring cute woodland creatures and advertised in the Mail on Sunday definitely are "art" is a bigger stretch than claiming they are are "collectable" !

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

Re: Using emojis now comes with legal warnings

> I can no longer use the rocket ship emoji to indicate I'm going to take my lady friend to the stars tonight?

Yes, what you can't do is publish a list of stocks with a rocket emoji or a poo emoji next to them and then claim you never made any representation as to buy or sell - and so that you happened to buy or short the same stocks beforehand is totally irrelevant

Yet Another Anonymous coward Silver badge

Isn't the only reason people buy baseball cards as collectables is that they think they will go up?

So doesn't this make the whole art market, from collectable plates in the sunday comics to Van Gogh subject to the SEC ?
