Amazon splatters ads to cut Kindle price

rcdicky
Thumb Up

I honestly don't think it'll make any difference

to the end user at least. Would it really bother people that much?

Considering the vast majority of the time, you're going to be reading books so won't see the ads much

If they popped up randomly while flicking through pages or made it take longer to fire up a book, I'd say it was a bad idea. As it is, it's a way for Amazon to make a bit more money, and a way for the end user to save money (who doesn't like saving money, despite it already being quite cheap to buy?)

Official: PS3 has more fanboys than the Xbox 360 does

Skewed by Japan?

Seriously? Sales are sales, not matter where they are. That'd be like saying the 360's sales are skewed because of the States

Genuinely surprised though (and pleased) - It's taken a while to get them there but Sony did it in the end. Just need to start setting sights on the Wii now!!

Hasn't been that way for a while now though. Both contract and PAYG handsets are locked to O2 (pretty sure it's same across all networks now), you're phone is locked to them until you pay for the unlock code (again, same across all networks)

Ofcom demands ISPs close 'upto' gap

rcdicky

Virgin Media

I've been with VM for the last few years and pretty much always get close to top speed (usually over 46Mb/s)

They also advertise "x is what our customers typically get" on their BB plans so it's as clear as it can be what you're going to get when you sign up.

If ADSL providers were advertising "up to 8Mb/s" and typically giving 6Mb/s or so I wouldn't have much of an issue with the way it's advertised but a lot of people I know get 2Mb/s or less which is too extreme of a difference

iPhone 'Death Grip' effect is real, plastic cases don't help

iPhone Bumper

Am I reading this right?

From what I gather they're saying most cases don't help the situation but that the iPhone 4 has a problem that "hasn't been investigated before" - this suggests they realised they needed to do further tests with the iPhone but didn't?

Add me to the list of people who will have tested this then. Successfully death-gripped with no bumper - no change in signal with the bumper on

(oh, and fwiw I can only recreate the signal dropping when intentionally wrapping my hand around the phone. Using it normally in my left hand does nothing)

Virgin Media to warn malware-infected customers

rcdicky

Mmmmk...

So people think this is a good idea but the £6 a month offering is a bit pushy??

I know a fair few people that, if I wasn't there to help them their PCs would be in a right mess.

If they received a letter from VM telling them to download AV/Firewall etc, they wouldn't have a clue what to do.

I think £6 a month is slightly steep, but the service will be useful for a lot of people.

If all ISPs jump on this wagon, it could make a hell of a difference. Should have been done a looong time ago.

As for VMs service, I'm with the "they're great crowd" as you can probs tell. But that's because I've been with them over 3 years now and only had my Internet go down twice. Once for about an hour and the other less that 10mins, which ain't bad.

New Xbox 360 said to 'still scratch discs'

Leaping around in front of the console?

I wouldn't have thought it would make that much of a difference tbh

The console generally resides underneath/beside the TV, and I can't imagine many people will be leaping around there...

Still, seems a bit odd they wouldn't rectify the situation. It's been nowhere near as wide-spread as RRoD but still enough of an issue that even unaffected users are aware of the risks.

Interesting though this is, it would have been much much funnier had the new 360's started RRoD'ing :P

iPad beats BlackBerry for browsing

rcdicky
WTF?

Hmmm...

It does seem a bit unfair that the iPad has been compared to smartphones for browsing tbh, even on my iPhone I didn't browse the net that much but I do on my iPad.

Also strange is that the article suggests the iPad can ONLY browse the internet :S

"Apple's iPad is now generating more web traffic than RIM's BlackBerry in North America, though at least a BlackBerry can do other things too."

I'm fairly sure I play games and stream video from my PC on my iPad (amongst many other things)
