Dutch unleash intelligent robot bins: No ID, no rubbish

Andraž 'ruskie' Levstik

Late to the game?

We've had such bins around here in Ljubljana, Slovenia for a few years now.

Can see them on the pic here:

http://www.jhl.si/snaga/locevanje

We have 5 containers with bio, paper, glass, plastics and other waste

Both bio and other waste require an RFID card to open.

My main issue with these is that the openings on the paper and plastics bins are to small for a lot of

the packaging bought in stores.

Do like them but as anything new there are a lot of people that simply refuse to use them and just put the trash next to them.

Emotional baggage

Andraž 'ruskie' Levstik

Hmmm bags and more bags

I went through quite a lot. But my requirements are that I can put atleast 2 1L bottles of water in them along with a ton of other stuff. Managed to get my hands on a Wegner backpack this year and I'm happy to report I still have plenty of room with 2 1.5L of sigg water bottles in there, an eeepc701(though I'd like to replace that with a 13" laptop device), ton of cabling, adapters, glass cleaning kit, portable fork/knife/spoon, portable headphones, etc... etc... etc... And still have room to put in my ereader and probably a lot more.

Very happy with it. Though the lack of waist straps is a bit annoying. And I can't use chest straps since it presses on my chest and can trigger my asthma.

I guess some people don't understand how hard getting the right gear for such things is.

Sysadmins! There's no shame in using a mouse to delete files

Andraž 'ruskie' Levstik

Hehe

I must say I do a lot of stuff via CLI but yes some things just aren't workable via CLI. I'll use a GUI webbrowser. True one that supports vi like keys and keyboard navigation. I'll rdesktop since managing windows is still a GUI approach and that's not necessarily bad.

Use what works best of what you need. But I must say that I've learned so much more about how things work with CLI vs GUI that it's sad how things are masked.

Yeah if it was produced by the USA government then most likely not. Simply because iirc all of their stuff produced with public money is Public Domained.

I could be wrong there but that's how I've read up a while ago.

As for deleting stuff off of comon shares etc... A better approach... each tyke has a known username/password and each file has a known owner... If there is an issue with copyright said complaint is directed to them/their rightful guardians.

That's how tho system should work.

Re: Washing

ssshhhssshshshshhshshshshshshshshhswushwushssshshshshshshsh bleep bleep bleep KLANK!!!

That's more or less how my washing machine runs. Just bought it last month after 20+ years of the old on. It's whisper silent. Other than the configurable bleeps that signify the end of the washing and the KLANK that means the relay to disconnect it from the power got triggered(which is actually heard while the bleeps aren't really heard).

And this is a 1600rpm model at that.

Re: view of copyright practicalities

Agreed. I Have the same. I pay for a cable TV subscription but get most stuff via torrent.

If they want me to pay provide me a link where Ican enter my CC info and a list of shows I've watched and I'll be more than happy to offer them some of my hard earned cash. Of course it would probably be much less than what they believe they could charge for it.

I'm willing(and do) to pay for a book 10-20eur but frankly most episodes wouldn't be worth more than 2eur each(normal 40 minute ep).

Oz parliament may investigate tech price discrimination

Andraž 'ruskie' Levstik

Not only in Australia

Though probably not as bad here in EU I can get stuff cheaper from other countries in the EU than my own. And that's usually with exhobirant shipping.

I can get most games 15eur cheaper from the UK than buying localy. I can buy most things 10-30% cheaper from any other country in the EU than getting the same stuff localy.

So yes not only Australia.

Not likely. If you make a product too cumbersome to use nobody will use it.

And considering that all the next-gen console stuff is still all rumor I doubt it. Why change something that works?

As for DRM considering all the crap that's going on there already. You need to secure the system not the game.

And yeah I'll stick to physical media until they rip it out of my cold-dead-hands. I can't lend a digital download to a friend while I can do so with a physical disc.

Re: Short lived success

Erm POST PC era??? What the hell are you talking about. Last I checked all the people around here that actually NEED to do actual WORK don't want tablets or smartphones. They want a decent laptop with an external screen to hookup to and be able to do their jobs.

Some even have some of the fancy 'droids but they really can't use that for anything. Any Frankly Windows 8 won't change that in any way.

UK government says no to turbo e-bike

Andraž 'ruskie' Levstik

Hmm

In this country we had at end of primary school a full term of cycling school. From roadsigns etc... to practical driving tests. I still have that "cycling license" somewhere. I just don't think anyone gives a c... about it.

Frankly I know how to ride... it's the damn motorists that don't. They have this insane cosmic idea that we're some sort of aliens on their planet of "My Road" and will get it in their heads that we should be removed from civilization. But as I also drive I see daily what stupidities some cyclists do not to mention the pedestrians.

Atleast the cops here have stopped a few cyclists doing stupid things. As for e-bikes the one's here need to be limited to 25km/h since that is the speed limit on bike lanes/paths. And PHYSICALLY SEPARATE bike paths/lanes from traffic and especially pedestrian areas.

Here's hoping

Panasonic CF-53 Toughbook 14in rugged laptop

Andraž 'ruskie' Levstik

A bit pricey

Something like that at a 600eur mark would definately be of interest. But the price point is way way to much imho. But I'd drop the optical drive. And yes thank you for no webcam. I'd swap the optical drive for an extra battery. This could be very usable then.

Game Group shares slide under a penny

Andraž 'ruskie' Levstik

My take on GAME

As someone who orders all his PS3 games from them online I'm happy with their service and prices. I'm not from the UK so I get like a 5-14day delivery times but I partialy blame our own postal system since they do air mail them.

I often get pre-orders and new games cheaper by 10-30 eur than the local sharks want for them. And that's with shipping included. And as I have a UK PSN account(because when I bought the PS3 they didn't have a local PSN store) I also buy the psn topup cards which bypasses the PS3 credit card issues and security issues.

I'd be really sad if they go out of business.

Sony PlayStation Vita

Andraž 'ruskie' Levstik

Give it up with Flash already

It's dead. Adobe killed it off and it won't be coming back. So stop claiming it's needed.

Flash on mobiles is dead and good riddance.

As for the Vita... first portable that I'm considering buying in the normal lifetime and not at the end of the life(like I did with gba/ds).

Andraž 'ruskie' Levstik

Hehe

Only in europe but we still get shafted on some of the prices so I order stuff from the UK as well. I can save up to 15 eur WITH shipping on a release.

But yeah I got Skyrim on the 17th so nearly a week after release. Still survivable.

Microsoft merges Windows 8 with Xbox Live

Andraž 'ruskie' Levstik

So basically...

They took Valve's existing idea behind portal 2(on the PS3 and Mac and Win) and integrated in their products. Way to go with innovation there M$... Don't forget to patent it as the most bloddy obvious thing on the planet.

How about game devs started actually coding this thing into their games already. Sheesh.

You see the C&C centers connect to this via the internet. Take that out and there is no way of controlling what happens. Of course someone could break something else but that would require a very specific targeted attack to work on a specific setup.

So yes... internet is necessary if you want to actually control stuff. It isn't a complete solution but it's a start.
