Downvoted only because I recently (successfully) upgraded my Win10 box to Linux mint. No reformatting of any existing NTFS disk or partition was required, and I can still see them in all their "glory" (or is that "gory"? In any case, they're still there....)

The comment about "let[ting] the updater loose" is interesting, in that I personally (and I suspect I am not alone) don't know how to contain the updater in the first place. How would one do it?
You know, this forum has a large number of really savvy posters (and a handful of ringers, too...but I digress). I would think that this group should be able to come up with a repeatable process to just shut the damn thing down. If it requires fiddling with a router or personal firewall, fine...just post the instructions (or a link to where such instructions exist). I have two new machines -- on with Win10 Pro and one w/ Win10 Home. The former will be converted to Linux as soon as I find that elusive round tuit. But the latter I need to be up and running, so I need it to be free of the malware that Windows Updates provide.
How can I do that? Please!!

The "providers"? Hell no, they'd have to spend money on infrastructure updates, and support equipment for users, and well...how's that gonna allow the head weenies to make their multi-million dollar bonuses each year? "We've got to protect our phony-baloney jobs, gentlemen!"
The gub'mint? Hell no, they will just trust in the magic power of "the market" to cause this wondrous thing called "broadband' to happen. (All the while conveniently ignoring that, in a monopoly environment like the one we have, there is no "market". And besides, upsetting the status quo might jeopardize the flow of corporate dollars into their campaign coffers, or perhaps endanger a post-gub'mint cushy do-nothing, phony-baloney job with the providers -- I'm looking at you Pai-boy!)
The consumer? Hell no, they don't even know that real broadband exists, most of them. And the ones that do (that 11%) either have too much money and are willing to pay the exploitive, monopolistic tariffs the "providers" demand.
So, situation normal...just a little cigar smoke...nothing to see here...move along, move along....
If you are going to give software the ability to countermand the flight crew, then you need to have fault-tolerant redundant sensing systems in place to make sure that the systems on the plane have accurate information.
Or... you simply do not give the software the ability to irrevocably countermand the flight crew. Period.
You have to remember that, as POTUS, a lot of Trump's tweets are purely "administrative", e.g. today's "HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!" tweet.

Over the years, and with much practice and patience, I've managed to successfully parse most of amanfromMars1's posts. But I'm getting older, now, and life is too short to take the time to try and formulate a new parser for your posts. So sod off, and stop using old versions of Babelfish to translate whatever native language you purport to speak into English. I'd rather learn Python.
It's gotten SO BAD with Linux and C/C++ our company said screw this and went ahead and developed it's own Windows 10-like OS shell and remade the command line interface of Linux to PROPER ENGLISH! We remade LAMP into custom Windows 2016 server-like environment with a decent Active Directory WAN/ALN management system analogue!We also REPROGRAMMED ALL OF LINUX using a customized version of EASY-TO-READ PASCAL SOURCE CODE that is FULLY COMMENTED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those of you from the Right side of the pond, consider a dry 20-25 mph wind which always seems to be blowing in your face, with an air temperature of roughly 20 degF, and full sun, not a cloud in the sky. Pretty, to be sure, but after a week of that, even the most strident CycleNazi will be clamoring for a trip to the store in a car.
