Google network lord questions cloud economics

Using "reserved instances" totally changes things

As you say: "the Google man uses Amazon's standard pricing for instances, rather than its reserved pricing."

There's a *vast* difference between those prices.

$0.68 per hour without reserving an instance,

$0.24 per hour when you reserve an instance (for a $2800 once-every-three-years reservation fee).

This knocks the monthly price down from $118k to under $55k.

Uhhh

Don't be ridiculous, that's obviously not what he's saying. He doesn't want to give his credentials to a THIRD PARTY.

You can securely use Exchange server with a BES hosted IN-HOUSE, so why can't you also connect an IMAP server?

Bypass signing up for Verified by Visa

If you're lucky enough to have avoided using VbV until now, you can continue to do so, even if a site prompts you to sign up:

Complete all the details on the first page of the signup (DoB, email address etc) and hit continue.

On the second page, there's a "Cancel" link at the bottom right.

Hit that and you'll be cheerily returned to the merchant where your transaction will have completed, and you still won't have a VbV account.

Uhh.. just listen to mySociety?

Why don't they just implement the recommendations mySociety put out months and months ago in the form of the Free Our Bills campaign?

The Tories even have the director of mySociety advising them now. Do they not bother listening?

"Half the people that judge these IT awards have back episodes of Beyond 2000 on Beta tape behind the couch."

Utter genius.
