Hot wet alien world discovered in constellation Cygnus

Re: Cloudy thinking

>Cloudy thinking

>"clouds didn't block our view of water molecules"

>So I'm no meteorologist, but doesn't "a blanket of water vapour"="clouds"

Water vapour is invisible, as is steam. What you're seeing as clouds is a mist of water droplets.

EE fails to apologise for HUGE T-Mobile outage that hit Brits on Friday

All a bit fishy

The odd thing was that email still worked, apparently "WhatsApp" connections still work, and anyone using TOR over the 3G connection could access the internet fine. So it pretty much seemed to be just web traffic that was interrupted.

And having a production service running on a single unresilient fibre? Is that a design screwup or deliberate cost cutting?

What do you do with it when you come to upgrade a couple of years later?

Re: Brought an Anonymous VPN for £25 per year.........

The difference is that a lot of businesses legitimately use SSL VPNs, how do you distinguish between an SSL VPN carrying Virtual Desktop traffic for example, and one carrying a copy of the latest blockbuster movie?

Chinese boffins crack cloaking tech for camouflage

cloaking flaw

I've always wondered, if you're fully cloaked, so all EM radiation is bent around you, how do you see where you're going?

Linux kernel dumps 386 chip support

Re: DX vs SX

The 386 DX didn't have a math co-processor, difference between 386DX and SX was the size of the buses, 16-bit data bus and 24-bit memory bus, as opposed to the 32bit buses on the DX.

It was the 486SX that lacked the math co-processor of it's DX sibling.

WD to crash down five terabyte desktop job, mutterings suggest

There can't be many people that need these drive capacities nowadays can there?

I've got years and years of accumulated digital media, being an early adopter of digital photography, music, and video, and I'm only at about 600Gb including backups.

Oracle hits reboot on Itanium software development

RichD

Not sure exactly what HP is hoping to achieve with this, do they really think that Oracle are going to do anything other than lip service porting of the latest versions. I wouldn't be surprised to see them actually crippling the code to make it slower on Itanium...

BT fibre-to-the-cabinet rollout penetrates 73 more exchanges

RichD

Bloody typical, I spend 18 months in Stannington (North Sheffield) on pitifully slow broadband - 1.4mb on a good day with a trailing wind - and 10 days after I move elsewhere, they announce FTTC coming to the Wadsley Bridge exchange. Grrrr...

Back to the Future DeLorean to go under the hammer

Surely...

"Where are all the real DeLorean Time Machines that were used in the Back to the Future movies?"

Surely the question is not *where* they are but *when* they are?

Apprentice runner-up becomes Greggs bigshot

RichD

Not fired?

I don't think he's ever said "you're fired" to the runner up, it's always just been "you're hired" to the winner.

Aussie retailer accuses UK shops of HDMI 'scam'

RichD

Very cheap HDMI cables

Well, I got a very cheap one of ebay for my ex, and it doesn't work past 720p. If you try and switch to 1080p it totally craps out (and it is the cable, cos another slightly more expensive cable does work ok). But we're still talking sub £2 for both the working and non-working, so it's probably just quality control that's not so good.

Multi-touch iMacs prepped in Cupertino?

FAIL

Meh

Seems an ergonomic FAIL to me, have the screen comfortable for your arms/hands and you're bending your neck to look down at it. Have it at the right height for looking at it, and you have to lift your arms up to operate it. Not for me, guys.

Half of Sony tellies to go 3D by 2013, says exec

RichD
Thumb Down

Why?

To be quite honest, I think 3D is pointless while ever it requires stupid glasses. It's a novelty, not a mainstream feature.
